| joshmurphy's Full Review: Smoketree Lodge |
My first experience on the ski slopes of western North Carolina was made quite pleasant, due in part to the accommodations at Smoketree Lodge, just down the road from Boone and around the corner from Banner Elk and Seven Devils. Its wonderful proximity to slopes (Sugar & Hawksnest are a handful of miles with Beech a couple more and Appalachian reasonably near) was the first thing I enjoyed. It also afforded comfortable proximity to other area attractions such as Grandfather Mountain, many dining choices, shopping & the Appalachian State University campus. The lodge itself boasts a commendable lobby with comfortable sitting area in front of a fireplace & television, replete with free coffee, area information, pool table, video games and several empty tables for card or board game-playing. At the other end of the lodge is an impressive heated indoor pool area with popular hot tub. That room allows wonderful daytime views of the mountains, being walled with glass. Adjacent also are bathrooms & saunas for both men & women. Between lobby & pool, are the several floors of accommodations. My family occupied 2 of the cozy, almost cramped efficiency/studio units. We had a partial kitchen that actually included all we needed to prepare our own meals, except a stove. We were somewhat surprised to hear people walking in rooms above and beside us, indicating relatively poor design during original construction. But other than that and a few other things that lent a dated feel, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay (4 nights). It is both a weekly ownership/timeshare property as well as nightly guest rental. Either option is a fine choice for nature lovers that need a comfortable bed & soothing amenities after a day of loving the area's mountainous nature.
