| leoreal's Full Review: Smooth 5.0P Treadmill |
I probably never would have bought a treadmill over the Internet if it wasn’t for my son. He purchased a Smooth 9.2 treadmill last year and has been very pleased with the performance and construction. He uses his for running, while I wanted a treadmill that was adequate for walking 30 minutes 4-5 times a week. At least that was the plan.
Living in a small condo with a lower level I needed a fold-up model, to minimize the required space. I didn’t want to take out a second mortgage to purchase a reliable and sturdy treadmill. I had three criteria. I wanted a quiet, stable treadmill with a reasonable cushioned deck. I talked to Amy at Smooth Fitness. Rather then push a more expensive unit on me, she suggested the Smooth 5.0. Which is their lowest costing treadmill.
This treadmill does not come with heart rate control. I thought about upgrading and decided against it. The advantage of the heart rate option is that you can control the speed of the treadmill by the level of your heart rate. Nice feature but I’m not sure I would really use it.
The features I appreciate are:
- A good size motor that runs very quietly.
- A thick belt that gives just the right amount of padding without being mushy.
- Toggle switches on the handrails to control speed and incline.
There are various pre-set and user programs. I never use them, I just set the speed and incline and adjust when I can’t take it any more. Which is easy with control switches on the hand rails. I do enjoy the calorie count. It's nice to know that you are burning off the extra portion from the night before.
I ordered the treadmill on a Wednesday and it was delivered the following Tuesday. It didn’t take an engineering degree to set up. It was a bear to get down in the rec room, but once you get it down the stairs there are rollers to easily move around. Folding the treadmill is really a breeze.
Buying a folding treadmill often means compromising on quality since it does not have the solid feel of a non-folding treadmill. In the case of the 5.0 I don't feel there was a compromise on performance over convenience of space.
The price that I paid included shipping. There is an additional charge to move inside the house and set-up.
I really didn’t shop around and there could be a better deal with another brand, but the proven track record with my son was the selling feature.

Leo
