When I was kid, I used to love it when my mom would take me to the Dairy Queen for ice cream. We steered clear of the food there, but the desserts were awesome. One of my favorites was the Dilly Bar, which was ice cream covered with crunchy chocolate on a stick. How did they get that crunchy chocolate on there. They would dip the ice cream into wet chocolate and then it would dry crunchy. It was a masterpiece.
Fast forward several years. I love to get ice cream toppings for my ice cream at the grocery store. I usually get oreos since I have an obsession, but I found Smucker's Magic Shell on the dessert topping end cap. Could it be the same as the crunchy chocolate used on the scrumptious dilly bars? I grabbed one and thought I'd give it a try.
Price and Packaging
The magic shell comes in a 7.25 ounce bottle of chocolate flavored dessert topping. The bottle reminds me of a bottle of tanning lotion. It has the same shape, it is brown, and it has a flip cap. It is made by Smucker's, so the Smucker's name is on top of a cute turtle with a chocolate shell. I got this bottle for about 2 bucks. The price varies from store to store, but $2 is about the average.
It's Magic
To use, shake well, flip the cap, and squeeze. Shaking well is a necessity. It addition to the "shake well" message on the bottle, there is a special sticker on top reminding you to shake well, and not refrigerate. I usually throw some ice cream in a bowl or a waffle cone, and squeeze some of the magic chocolate on top. The liquid usually runs down the cracks of the ice cream and covers the top. You have to wait a couple of minutes for the chocolate to harden, and if you decide to be clever like I tried, and put the chocolate in the bottom and cover it with more ice cream, it won't work. The chocolate won't harden under ice cream, apparently it only works on top. Once the chocolate hardens, it is absolutely delicious. Just like the dilly bars I remember, but I use it on all different types of ice cream.
Nutritional Info
The scary part is that 2 tablespoons of this stuff contains 210 calories and 16 grams of fat. Probably the only redeeming quality is the 4% of iron, but it does also contain 1 gram of protein.
Ingredients include: sugar, sunflower oil, coconut oil, cocoa, chocolate, contains 2% or less of: cocoa processed with alkali, soy lecithin, salt, vanilla, and milk.
Overall
The Magic shell is truly magical. For an occasional indulgence, I would recommend the Smucker's Magic Shell. The chocolate is extremely tasty, and if it makes you feel better, you can use low calorie ice cream to offset the calories in the shell.
