tucker300's Full Review: Ravensburger Snail's Pace Race
My son received this board game, Snail's Pace Race by Ravensurger as a gift many years ago. I think it is a great concept.
To begin with, there is no assembly required, which for me is a great thing. Included in the box, is the game board, 6 wooden snails (blue, pink, orange, red, yellow and green - one of each color) and 2 colored dice. They came in plastic bags of which I discarded after the first time we played because everything fits nicely inside the box with nothing really banging around. The dice have 6 dots each on them to match the color of the wooden snails. This game is very durable.
This game can be played with up to 6 players and with as little as 2 players. It is for ages 3 - 7 but I must tell you that my 7 year old is not interested in this game at all and hasn't been for a while. My now 4 year has been playing this game for over a year though and has not lost interest as of yet. It does state on the box that it is NOT for children under 3 years old because the small parts (the dice) could be a choking hazard.
To begin, lay the game board out and place the 6 snails on the starting positions that are marked with the arrows of the same colors. Then, everyone playing will pick which snail they feel will win the race. After that, everyone will chose who rolls the dice first and play then proceeds counter-clockwise. The person that rolls the dice will move the snail's whose color dots appear after the dice stop rolling. Then the next person takes their turn and so on and so on. From one end of the board to the other, there are 8 spaces that each snail must move through till it reaches the end. The board is colorful with little animals, frogs, rabbits and flowers around the boarder. At the end of the race, each snail ends up in front of a patch of cabbage. Which ever snail reaches the other end of the board first, is the winner of that race.
But wait, the fun does not have to stop there. There are so many variations to this game. You can decide to pick which snail will come in first and last or you can just chose to make the winner the snail that comes in last place. Which ever way you decide to play it, the winning players are the ones who guessed correctly. More than one person can pick the same colored snail.
This game, I feel teaches counting (although only up to the number 8) and it also teaches your child about colors but most important, it is basically a non-competitive game and shows them that even if you come in last, you are still a WINNER!! I think everyone should try this game with their child at least once.
