Written: Aug 08 '01 (Updated Jul 26 '05)
Pros:Precise, Easy Read, Neat Structure
Cons:Dialogue the same font as the Narrators Voice
The Bottom Line: Reading the Script of Snatch on Paper was definitely a fun and entertaining experience aside from watching it!

What you are about to read is the first of a series of 3 reviews all involved with the September 2000 release of the movie entitle Snatch. The first being in the books category, my least favorite and most difficult to write about. Secondly, I will give an overview of the DVD that I purchased about a month or so ago, and finally the soundtrack. If I am on your notify list then I assume you will come back and if not I urge you to come back an read because I will do my best to be as informative and witty on each topic for your reading pleasure.
Let's begin .....
I never read books. I hate libraries, I hate Chapters, I despise books! They just seem rather long and take a lengthy period of time to either make a significant point or to climax. If I had my way, everything in literature would be converted to video or audio. For recreational purposes, Snatch : The Shooting Script is one of the only books I've read for myself in a long long time.
Last Book I Read : Jughead with Archie : Issue #66
Browsing through the lost jungles of books in Chapters clutching a mocha frappucino from Starbucks with a great face on after beating the Photo Hunt Record at Pastry's Donuts (we rule CM!), this book Snatch caught my eye and immediately - it was a given - that I had to own a copy of the book.
I had seen the movie the night it was released and I was overly impressed. To this day, my buddies and I are shooting references and catch phrases to what I believe is one of the best movies ever made. Note : Planet of the Apes is the best movie of 2001, no questions asked! (see my review from Aug 2nd and the bashing and insulting comments I received :P)
Physical Features of the Book
The book - I'm not sure if it comes in different shapes or styles - comes in an 8 x 5 paperback cover. The front consists of 6 characters from the film who play significant roles within, that underlyingly keep the storyline and plot advancing. They stand in what seems to be a strip of film as seen bordering the book.
The book contains 6 sections :
1) Introduction
2) About the Cast
3) About the Filmmakers
4) Cast List
5) Crew List
6) Screenplay
1) Introduction :
Guy Ritchie, director and creator of the movie Snatch provides us with sort of a monologue of his thoughts on the making of the movie. This section basically in a 2 page schpeel outlines the goods, the bads, the conflicts he encountered as well as the enjoyable moments he had creating the movie.
2) About the Cast :
Here we are introduced to the characters along with their real name, their role in the movie Snatch as well as movies, screenplays and tv shows that they have performed in. I like these sections in books because there were numerous occasions, I stopped and thought, oh yeah "Benicio Del Toro WAS in The Usual Suspects ..... Dennis Farinas WAS on Miami Vice!" They detail a paragraph to a half page for each main character in the movie.
3) About the Filmmakers
The way I am with books and reading is that I have to read every word and skip anything. This section describes the lives, the roles and the past features of everyone involved condensed in a measly paragraph. Reading about the Director and Producer is all fine and dandy, but come on ... who wants to read about the Makeup Designer!?!?
4) Cast List
Neatly listed alphabetically by the Actor's/Actress' name are their screen names. This is beautiful because even though I know the movie inside out, the odd times I forgot who one of the cast members is. I jump back for a thorough and neat reference and legend.
Note : It was interesting to see that only 4 Ladies out of like 50 actors were present!
5) Crew List
Like I mentioned before, the Director and Producer are the only names people want to read about. They only list the rest of the crew because they don't want to hurt their poor feelings.
If anyone is interested .....
Focus Puller : Stuart Graham
Grip : Terry Williams
Location Manager : Pat Karam
Props Buyer : Linda Wilson
Boom Operator : Arthur Turner
Gimme a break .......
6) Screenplay
The whole script of Snatch is included within the book and is neatly organized in dialogue format for easier reading. The only problem with it is that the descriptions of scenarios carry the same font as the dialogue and you sometimes get confused when all of a sudden under Avi's name you have
AVI
Shut Up and Sit Down You Big Bald F***
Pause.
Avi does not say "Pause" but there are many occasions this happens. In a scenario where your re-enacting Brad Pitt's pikey voice it is hard to re-adapt to narrator's voice when they are the same font. Everything else with the screenplay is fine and I'm glad it's not in an "8" font like a lot of other books. You could read this book from 10 feet away.
Accompanied by the script are black and white photos and screenshots from the movie. A majoriyt of the shots captured seem suitable for the scene but some are totally unnecessary because they don't fit the scene. Overall the script is easy enough to follow.
What's Snatch About Already!?
I will have to squash in and be as vague as I can with the plot so I will be saving it for Snatch : DVD, Part 2 of 3.
A diamond heist goes beserk and we run through a series of events through different types, races, and nationalities of gangsters around the world who all have their own criminal activities that all lead to one special 84 Karat diamond.
I will go into more detail and description of characters in my next review.
Final Thoughts of Snatch : The Shooting Script
After arriving home from a gourmet dinner and a forceful "Greek Gutterball" jamming sushi rolls in my mouth, I arrived at home to polish off the 224 page book in about 2 and a half hours.
I've never "read" a movie before and it was definitely something I would do again. The same publishing company has released American Beauty and Traffic, a few titles I may be interested in.
A dialogue book is easier to follow than a novel and I really enjoyed that aspect of it. For anyone who has seen the movie, I strongly recommend you look into the purchase of this title. You can see Brad Pitt's conversation and FINALLY understand what the heck he is talking about! A great read, I enjoyed it!
**** This is Part 1 of 3 in my Snatch Trilogy'Pinion****
