Pros: Same inner goodness as regular Snickers, dark chocolate coating.
Cons: Might not have the same chocolate impact as the original.
I've seen the Snickers Dark in stores for a while now and never really thought they were anything major; the whole "Limited Edition" aspect of it is nothing more than a marketing tool in my eyes. If something sells then there is no way a company is going to stop making it. Likewise, if it is a complete flop they can discontinue it with some grace and save face at the same time. They don't have to admit that they put out a crappy product by falling back on the "it was a limited time product" safety net. I am sure that if enough people show a liking for it the Snickers Dark will join the ranks of other Snicker bar variations. What did this candy freak think about it? It's got a unique taste to it but I can definitely see how some people will hate this bar with a passion.
Snickers Limited Edition Dark Chocolate Bar
As soon as you take your first bite and your taste buds pick up on it you get the bold and no-so-sweet dark chocolate taste. The inside of the Snickers Dark is the same as a regular Snickers bar so there isnt much of a surprise there. If you aren't into dark chocolate then this isnt the candy bar for you; the outer coating is just that dark chocolate. If you are eating a Snickers for the taste I hate to say it but this doesn't really have the same type of indulgence as a regular Snickers bar. Sure, the inside is the same and you get that chewy texture and nice caramel gumminess from it but it's the missing milk chocolate taste that might lead you to grab something else to snack on. Of course if dark chocolate is your thing then this is something that will have your mouth hopping with happiness.
There aren't many dark chocolate products that I will eat on a regular basis; when I tried this I had hoped that it would have a taste similar to the Dover Dark Chocolate bar and while the outer coating did, the inside of the bar wasn't all that complimentary to the outside. A lot of that could be chalked up to eating regular milk chocolate products most of the time but I really think that if this had a slightly thicker coating of dark chocolate it would be able to mix better with the inner ingredients. As it stands the dark chocolate starts off being less sweet as the milk chocolate used on the regular bars and once you start eating it you lose the taste of it. That could be because of the slightly bitter taste of the chocolate or the peanuts, caramel and nougat inside it. Of course, you might try this and fall in love with it and think that it's perfect.
Are they any better for you than a regular Snickers bar? The Snickers Dark is a 1.83 ounce bar and has 250 calories per serving; 13 grams of fat, 30 grams of carbohydrates [23 from sugar] and 4 grams of protein. A regular Snickers bar is 2.07 ounces, 280 calories, 14 grams of fat, 35 grams of carbohydrates [30 grams from sugar] and 4 grams of protein. It's a matter of math; the regular Snickers contains more so the extra 30 calories is justified mathematically. Ultimately it's up to what you are in the mood for; personally I like the taste of it but it doesnt satisfy my cravings if I want something that has chocolate in it. I'm better off just giving in and having a regular Snickers than to try and save a few calories with the Dark version because I know about a half hour later the craving is going to come back.
These don't cost more than regular Snickers bars and there are no markings on the wrapper to indicate that they are indeed a "limited edition" type of product. I got these on sale for three bars for .99 cent at my local Rite Aid store when other MasterFood products were running under the same promotion. Not everyone is going to like these but for the price I couldn't pass up giving them a try. The normal selling price is about .65 cents a bar and there's no chance in hell that I'd ever pay that for any candy bar when I know that other stores in the area have them or comparable items on sale.
The Bottom Line
Fans of dark chocolate will more than likely love this bar but for me, well, honestly, the other ingredients seemed to over power the dark chocolate wrapping. Another ting I noticed is that it is a little more temperature sensitive than the regular bars. I bought three each of the regular and Dark bars and all three of the Dark bars had caramel leaks on the ends of them. This could be from a processing problem or that they were exposed to a high temperature for a while or it could just be that they are a little more sensitive than the regular Snickers bars. Snickers does print a guarantee that the product will be fresh on the wrapper and all you need to do is call the toll free number and give them the information. I called them to ask them if the Dark bars were more sensitive than the regular ones and I was told that they shouldnt be but there are a lot of variables that go into things like delivery, where they are stored, how they are handled and if they are older stock. The ones that I purchased were relatively new, made only three weeks before so that rules out a few possibilities.
As always, thanks for the visit
