| modernmarvel's Full Review: Snow White's Scary Adventures - Disneyland |
On each visit to Disneyland, the kids insist that we have to do the full tour of the Fanatasyland rides, including, of course, Snow White's Scary Adventure. The bummer about Fantasyland for adults, is that many of the rides are basically the same. You board a small car that drives you past a bunch of scenes from a vintage Disney movie. This one tries to be different by making including scary scenes, but it really is very similar to other Disney Fantasyland rides.
THE WAIT
The line begins by snaking around the outside of the building that houses the ride. If you are lucky and it is not that busy, you may start off entering the building. Like the other buildings in Fantasyland, the one that houses this ride looks like a small, vintage, European inn. Once you get inside, there is a little bit of theming. The inside looks like it is made of wood and has an old European flavor. There is a little vignette of items from the Snow White movie on display but not much else. As you get toward the end of the line, you can see the ride vehicles load and unload.
We notice that the line for this ride is usually one of the shortest in Fantasyland. We visited on a slow day and there was no wait at all.
BOARDING
There are no height restrictions. You do have to step up into the car but other than that, boarding is easy. There is only one odd thing worth mentioning. My eight year old rode in the front of the car which was fine. I rode in the back with my five year old. My five year old got in first and sat down. Then I got in. Oddly, the ride dictator insisted that I switch places with my son. This was rather awkward since there was no easy way to switch places in the small space so we ended up holding up the ride as we got off and reboarded in the correct order. As we traveled through the ride, I couldn't figure out why it mattered which side my son sat on since the ride was pretty gentle and there was no risk he could fall out or get injured on either side.
THE RIDE
The ride is a four seat vehicle. Two can sit in the front and two can sit in the back. There is a lap bar to keep you in place. The ride itself is gentle although it does move pretty fast and does whip around a few corners.
The theme of the ride is basically the witch from Snow White. The first couple of scenes show Snow White happy and dancing around with the dwarfs. These 3D scenes are pretty good and detailed although they are all in brown and not very visually appealing. You also pass through the dwarf's mine and see the gems glowing in the walls. The rest of the ride is about the witch and you see her both as the pretty witch and the old hag. She makes the apple and you see a scary skeleton. There are a couple of scenes where she seems to jump out at the ride vehicle. The last scene implies that the witch dies by falling over the cliff but you don't see her actually die. As you exit the ride, there is a mural that says they all lived happily ever after.
Overall, the witch scenes are not filled out and not very visually interesting. Sometimes, there is only one image per scene. There is a lot of paint that glows under black lights and low budget effects. However, my biggest gripe about the ride is that it really doesn't follow the plotline of the movie. The ride is really designed to appeal to small children. All the small children I know go on these rides looking for their favorite character. It is hard to see where Disney is going with Snow White's Scary Adventure because the ride's story is so disjointed compared to the movie. It makes no sense to go from happy dwarfs, through a mine, past a bunch of witch scenes and exit past a mural which little kids can't read. Plus, the ride moves fast enough that little kids can't really take it all in.
Overall, my kids liked the ride but had no interest in going on again.
RECOMMENDATION
This is just an average ride. A few of the witch scenes might scare timid kids but it is not particularly scary. It is worth doing once but there are better Fantasyland rides.
