SNOWY COAT - White Coat Pet Shampoo

Written: Jun 19 '02 (Updated Jun 19 '02)
Pros:Whitens and conditions
Cons:Does not lather well. Could be costly to use on larger animals.
The Bottom Line: I give Snowy Coat an average rating because it lathers poorly, but an excellent on its whitening and conditioning qualities.

We have a new family member. His name is Danny and he is a pure bred Maltese we gave to my daughter for her 14th birthday in April.

At our first vet visit I asked if it was ok to use baby shampoo on our little Danny. After all he was an 8-week old baby and weighed in a 1.8 pounds. I was told that human shampoos, even baby shampoos, were not the right PH for dogs. So I made a trip to the local pet shop to check out the different dog grooming products they had for sale to see which one I would get.
The clerk recommended Lambert Kay's Snowy Coat.
The pearly blue shampoo comes in a 12 oz clear plastic bottle with a flip top and cost $9.99.

The reason this shampoo was recommended was because it helps prevent yellow discoloration and helps make white coats lustrous without containing any bleach. It also contains a conditioner.
The directions have you wet the dog and pour shampoo along the back, work it into the coat, rinse and shampoo again, finishing with a good rinse until the water runs clear.

Snowy Coat has a very mild fruity scent. It did a wonderful job cleaning up our little pup.
You know puppies need to be cleaned pretty regularly because they have not yet learned to discreetly step around their bowl movements. They seem to delight in stepping in it lol.
Needless to say, it cleans him up very nicely and also restores his coat to a brilliant white. His coat feels soft and silky and seems to comb out without too much trouble.
He smells fresh and clean, but doesn't retain the scent of the shampoo.

Overall Snowy Coat does a nice job for us in cleaning and whitening Danny's coat, but I don't think it lathers up as well as our human shampoos. Because of this it takes a lot of shampoo to do an adequate job.

I looked at some of the other shampoos at the pet store and none of them were inexpensive, but I'm not sure if this is a good buy at $10 for a 12 oz. bottle or not.

Since Danny is a toy breed, and will not get any larger than 6 to 8 pounds, this really isn't a big problem for us. But if you have a larger dog you might use this shampoo up quickly.

I also noticed that the bottle does not list the ingredients it uses. So I don't know if any perfumes or dyes are used, or if this product contains soap.
It seems to work well for us, and doesn't make Danny itch or sneeze or any other kind of indication that he may be sensitive to any of the ingredients.

We discovered another thing we had to take into consideration with our dog grooming supplies when we completed Danny's final puppy shots and were advised to start him on flea prevention and control.
The vet recommended Advantage topical flea control. Advantage is only applied once a month, but one of its dis-advantages is that it is washed off if you use a shampoo that contains soap.

Since I don't know if Lambert K Snowy Coat pet shampoo contains soap, and no mention on the label is made as to weather it is compatible with topical flea control products, we decided to purchase a soap free shampoo from the vet.
Since then I have noticed that there are also several soap free shampoos available in the pet stores.
Just read the labels to make sure it is soap free if you are using Advantage flea control.

I still plan on using the Lambert K Snowy Coat because I like how it whitens up Danny's coat. But I plan on only using it once a month for the last shampoo day just before I re-apply the Advantage.
