Butter Snap Pretzels - Love the taste, the shape, and the low fat!
Written: Aug 26 '10 (Updated Aug 26 '10)
Pros:Delicious, butter flavor with very little fat.
Cons:I usually don't stop at one serving.
The Bottom Line: I'm so happy to have found a snack that's delicious, that doesn't cause my diet to spin out of control!
I have found my new favorite snack food: Butter Snaps from Snyder's of Hanover. These little pretzel snacks have found a spot in my pantry, and in my heart. First of all, I know this is probably a shallow thing to say, but I love the shape! They are mall rectangles, about an inch one on side, and a bit bigger on the other side. And they're made up of rows and columns, like a grid. Or the side of a cage. Or a spreadsheet! Yes, I know, that sounds silly, but what can I say - for whatever reason the "checkerboard pattern" of this snack is just really fun!
But of course it's the taste that really matters. Crisp pretzels, with just the right amount of salt. And a hint of butter. Not too much - these are not greasy in the least. They're just out-of-this-world delicious. Personally, I dip them in mustard. My husband thinks I'm nuts, but in my mind, pretzels go with mustard. I love the combination of salt, crunch, and spicy mustard. In this case, the shape makes dipping extra delightful as the "grid" pattern holds the mustard very nicely.
Best of all, I can enjoy this treat without too much guilt. This is a fairly low-cal snake that's very low in fat. Each one-ounce serving contains 120 calories and only 1g of fat! And, like most pretzels, this one has less than a gram of sugar. Is it a perfect food? Of course not! There are 25g of carb and 270 mg of sodium.
The first few ingredients are unbleached wheat flour, water, malt, canola oil, and salt. Where does the butter flavor come from? I'm really not sure. Further down in the ingredients list is "enzyme modified butterfat (milk)" followed by "natural flavors". I'm not sure if the butterfat gives the buttery flavor or the "natural flavor". All I know is, these are delicious.
They smell great (a bit buttery), taste great, and don't ruin my diet... A real winner in my book!
