I was devastated when one of my best friends died this year. It was sudden and unexpected and I still cannot believe he is gone. This was a man who loved life and appreciated nature. He fed the squirrels, the doves and the especially the multitude of hummingbirds that visit us here in Texas each year. Sitting on his front deck was an experience as large groups of them would hover directly in front of your face, daringly. Then, swoop and glide to the hummingbird feeders for dinner.
After his funeral, I spent a lot of time with him at his burial site. It was neatly lined with brick and filled with lava rock. A couple of plants adorned the edges and I pondered on what my contribution would be in rememberance of such a lively man. Of course, I take fresh cut flowers every week but I wanted something special for him. When I saw this Hummingbird Solar Stake while I was shopping, I simply could not resist. I bought two of them for $14.95 a piece at Lowe’s. What an appropriate decoration for his grave. His wife agreed that it was a great idea.

This is a decorative piece intended for use in the garden. The stake contains a circular solar panel and a rechargeable battery. It was easy to assemble only having to join the plastic stake and extension and insert the battery in the stake. The hummingbird is made of a transparent acrylic and the light inside changes from yellow to green to blue to red. The colors are quite discrete, not blaring so it creates a gentle effect, perfect for my friend’s burial site.
My Experience:
We were quite excited when we approached the cemetery. My friend’s wife, whom I have known for twenty years, had a huge bouquet of orchids, his favorite flower. Although his death had been very difficult for her, she had been through her initial depression and could now talk about fond memories without the tears. She was coming along just fine.
We spent about two hours fixing up the burial site and when we had finished, you could tell that he was loved and remembered fondly. It was easy to insert the stakes in the ground on either side of his headstone and I extended the rods to the same height. It was a drab afternoon when I placed them and they didn’t light up. In fact, I thought they were faulty. However, when we returned that evening to check on them, they shined brightly, dancing in the dark like little sentinels.
A couple of weeks later, I had to replace one of them that refused to light up but the second one which the clerk at Lowes had happily exchanged has worked fine ever since. I have since placed a hummingbird feeder in a tree close to his grave and hopefully his little friends will visit him in the spring. For now, the Hummingbird Solar Stake is doing its job at bringing out an old friend’s personality, even after death.
Conclusion:
When I first thought of this idea, I was a little apprehensive that it might look tacky. However, that could not be more untrue. Together with the beautiful flowers we adorn the burial site with, these Hummingbird Solar Stakes are a tribute to his love of nature and I am really happy with the outcome.
It has been about two months since I placed them and they are still twinkling at dusk. I am not sure how long they will last but I intend to add that information to this review when they eventually expire. I am sure that their exposure to the elements will have a hand in their durability, but we will see.
