Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:Interesting story line, unpredictable plot, tear jerker
Cons:Ending weak (but not a reason to skip this book)
Dean Koontz's best writing is in full effect in this novel. A master of a the SCI-fi/suspense novel, he has done it again!
Plot
The book centers on a grief stricken man who has recently lost his wife and two daughters in a commercial plane crash when he stumbles upon some "strange" happenings. The entire novel is about this man finding out what caused the plane to crash.
As with any sci-fi novel, the underlying plot is not realistic. But it's easy to suspend disbelief while reading Koontz. He uses a great blend of fact and fiction to make the story seem as true to life as possible.
Characters
The main characters are well developed without pages of needless detail. You actually feel empathy for these characters as they suffer through grief and elation.
Analysis
The best part of this novel, as with much of Koontz's writing, is that it's completely unpredictable. The entire first half of this book gives no indication as to how the ending will turn out (which is a breath of fresh air). By not being able to easily guess the outcome, it made me much more interested in how Koontz would wrap it all up.
To reveal any details of the novel would be to spoil it, so I will keep tight-lipped.
Recommendation
While this is classified in the sci-fi category, I believe this book is better suited for those who are loyal suspense novel readers. While the science fiction element is there, its not overpowering.
