Sole Survivor, Dean Koontz
Written: Jul 10, 1999
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:sheer briiliance, horror of the human kind
Cons:None. This is a brilliant piece of work
There are forces at work behind the scenes that deliberately cause wholesale slaughter and carnage, but arranges it to look as if a random accident occurred. These forces consist of both corporate megalomaniacs and government officials, who believe that they have a mandate to play God with other people's lives. Former reporter Joe Carpenter, mired in grief over the loss of his beloved spouse and children due to a plane crash, is unaware that this conspiracy to manipulate the game of life exists.
However, Joe is a fast learner and his world spins further out of control when he meets Rose at the grave sites of his family. She proves to him that the crash was no accident or error, but a deliberate act that was mutually covered up by the Feds and industry. Rose, the sole survivor of that catastrophic crash, believes that she was the intended victim because she was carrying stolen government property involving an experiment that she planned to reveal to the media. The Feds wanted her stopped at any cost, so they caused a plane crash. When Joe discovers the truth behind Rose's actions, he realizes that he has now become part of something bigger than any government. He is now a man with an impossible mission to fulfill, but one, if successful, will change the world.
SOLE SURVIVOR is Dean Koontz at his infinite best as he tackles the western religious questions about the afterlife while wrapping it inside a techno-thriller plot that keeps the adrenaline pumping at a furious rate. For those who thought Mr. Koontz had reached the apex of his talent, they need to only read this novel to see that he has widened his scope into a new direction that simultaneously thrills and chills. This is that rare novel that is worth buying in hard cover at even twice its current
