Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
Some Girl is a movie about four young women. Attractive twenty-something year olds who haven't got a clue. About relationships, commitment, love, or even themselves. This is a movie designed for women, one that makes this woman happy she's no longer a twenty-something.
Claire, April, Suzanne, and Jenn. None of them knows what they want out of life, or how to get it. They're all drifting along, without a clue, suffering heartache over and over, without knowing why.
Claire (portrayed beautifully by Marissa Ribisi) has the most vulnerable heart, and suffers the most, from her low esteem, and her absolute need to be loved. She's really thrown for a loop when Chad (Jeremy Sisto) plays with her heart. Naturally she gets the biggest role, as Marissa also wrote the story. It's also no real surprise that Claire's brother Jason is played by Geovanni Ribisi (Marissa's real-life brother).
April is also played beautifully, by Juliette Lewis. April is no more successful at love than Claire, but for completely different reasons. Whereas Claire is basically "good", if naïve and desperate, April bounces from one meaningless romp to another, constantly feeling bad about herself, and ignoring the only man who really cares about her.
Suzanne and Jenn are equally unhappy, but they are mere background figures. With so little material dedicated to them, it makes me wonder how much of Suzanne and Jenn ended up on the cutting room floor.
And that's the real problem with this movie - the editing decisions.
For example, Claire's parents are shown in exactly one scene that is completely bizarre, out of place, and unnecessary. And, from looking at Claire's appearance during this scene, it's obvious it was filmed at a different time from the rest of the movie. Again, it makes one wonder at the editing process.
Similarly, the ending has a very chopped feel to it, leaving some major questions unanswered.
So did I like it? Yes. But I'm a woman. And I was twenty-something once. And even though it was quite a long time ago, I remember a lot of the angst, heartache, confusion, and drama associated with that time period. This movie does a pretty good job of portraying those emotions. These women are all over the map, and you just hope they survive this stage, and come out wiser, more mature, and hopefully still in one piece.
As might be guessed, my husband hated every minute of it. Luckily, there were only about 90 minutes for him to hate. As for me, I wonder just how many minutes were chopped out, minutes that might have made for a smoother, more complete film.
There's quite a bit of explicit sexual content in this movie. Not much sex or nudity is actually shown, but sex is discussed quite openly amongst the women. Some viewers will be turned off by the frankness. But many women will enjoy this movie - especially women past the twenty-something stage for whom the angst is just a memory.
