A lovely review, but my H rating instead of VH is because... (Reply to this comment)

of a lack of knowledge about how easy it is to find ingredients in the continental US, how difficult the recipes are, a little more about YOU using the recipes, etc.
The fact that you have a close history with these recipes and that the book is by your mom, and that a celebrity author not known for cookbooks had a close relationship with your family and wrote the foreword - all that ADDS to the review as far as I'm concerned. You never said this was the best cookbook in the world because your mom wrote it - I liked the fact that she includes commentary in it; makes for a more interesting and unique cookbook. I just need to know more about the mechanics - ingredients lists, pictures, ease of instructions, etc., etc.
I disagree with Cindy's take - I totally believe you should be rewarded for your honesty in revealnig your relationship to the author!
Interesting review (but incomplete, sorry!).

I agree that full disclosure should be rewarded not punished. And it is the foreword that is in question.

Ok. First, the reviews as posted really aren't even good cookbook reviews. There are members who give a lot of info about both the recipes. difficulty, ingredients, etc. Those reviews make choosing a new cookbook easy.
Second, I'm not sure why I should be grateful that this reviewer didn't just lie. I suppose she could have done so. Stating that does not make me more inclined to trust her opinion. I stand by my rating, which is of the review and not of the reviewer. That's an important distinction which many people seem to miss.

The writer could easily have concealed her relationship to the author but chose to be honest. Penalizing her by assuming her bias makes her comments not trustworthy seems rather unfair.
She's a food professional and I think capable of sufficient objectivity to inform a potential reader about the books and its contents.

As with your other cookbook review, this one is not helpful to me because of the lack of objectivity when reviewing a book written by a close family member.
