Living in the country as we do, we have become beneficiary to a rising contingent of lost, runaway, throwaway and otherwise homeless pets. We are now down to 3 dogs in the dog yard out at the barn, however, it once held 7 canine visitors who had come, some famished, all downhearted, nearly hopeless that they might live out their lives in the wellbeing and comfort of good chow, playmates, and a protected place to live and play.  Some of the dogs have arrived wearing an old collar, and one was even dragging the remnants of her leash, however all have arrived without any identification.  Some dogs appeared to be dropped, other were perhaps left behind by loving owners who could no longer care for them, had had to move and hoped for the best.

Most arrive ravenous, covered with ticks, and one thin little mom brought along 2 round puppies with her, how she kept them fed I continue to wonder.  Every dog arrives expectant, somewhat apprehensive, and distressed.

Internet search including the DOG TAG ART site indicates:  DOG TAG ART was started by Jack Carrier to solve a problem sparked by his own elderly Chocolate Lab who had a penchant for wandering off.

Following a worrisome evening when Maggie wondered off with out her identification, Carrier spent several hours engaged in a complicated web of phone calls and worry before Maggie was finally home.

Carrier realized there has to be a better way for a finder to get in contact with a pet owner WITHOUT relying on a phone number. Because Carrier was traveling a lot at the time, Maggie could be unprotected for long stretches of time, and that was the situation leading to formation of Virtual Leash and ultimately Dog Tag Art.

Launched in May of 2010, Virtual Leash solves the lost pet problem by allowing pet finders to use a pet's unique website to contact MANY people INSTANTLY and simultaneously using a variety of voice (robo-call), text, email, and Twitter. Because the site shows any address chosen by pet owner  on a Google Map;  finders see important info about that pet instantly.

While Virtual Leash was in development, Dog Tag Art was begun as a side project and has grown in it's own right to become a community built around fun, art, our beloved pets, and giving back to Humane Societies.

Seed funding and valuable business coaching by Scott Freshwater provided impetus to the burgeoning enterprise.  Moving to a Small Business Incubator at AB Tech College near Asheville, North Carolina where the company still resides, Jack Jack won a "Technology Business Plan Competition" that was designed to give a boost to a company nearly "ready for production," August 2009.  A panel of judges chose Jack's plan and presentation and granted the business $25,000.

December of 2009 Russell Barker, joined the company as operations manager with over 10 years experience in the e-commerce field.
