kidrockx's Full Review: Someone Like You by Original Soundtrack
First of all I have to confess to you that I'm kinda crazy about the movie "Someone like you". (I know, I know it's a so called chick flick, but me being a "chick", I think that's tolerable;) So my opinion on this soundtrack can not be impartial.
The album's opener (which is actually the closing song in the movie) is Tom Jones and The Cardigans' dynamic version of the Talking Heads' classic "Burning down the house".Well I never cared much about Tom Jones, but was sort of having high expectations from the Swedish group The Cardigans. Sadly I figured I should have stuck to "My Favorite Game or "Erase/Rewind".
Another remake (and this time the target is the glam-rock classic "Bang a Gong (Get It On)" from T.Rex released in 1971) of a great song comes from the new U.K sensation London Bus Stop. With the groovy club beat, enriched! background vocals, rapping and samples from the original song it's destined to become a club hit,but here again the original remains not surpassed.
Another sensational newcomer featured is Imani Coppola with "I'm A Tree" from her debut album "Chupacabra" (goat sucker in Spanish!?!)
With inspiring lyrics like
It's hard to get up.
You could say I'm fed up.
One things for certain,
I gotta keep my head up
The sun ain't hard to see,
just turn off your TV.
Everything around you is just part of every other thing.
I am a tree.
The sun ain't hard to see,
just turn off your TV.
Everything around you is just part of every other thing.
I am a tree
Keep your head up, Keep my head up.
Keep your head up girl, keep your head up
I'm ready to give this rapper/singer/violinist a warm welcome. (is it just that my hearing has gone bad through listening so much LOUD music, or does the melody remind everybody of Beck's Loser?)
The legendary ska/pop group Madness had 2 major hits in the U.S ; "Our House" and "It Must Be Love" The latter was a cover of Labi Siffre's (British pop singer, songwriter, and poet) hit from 1971 and became a huge success of the 80s. And I think it's as fresh as ever.
Stephin Merritt, songwriter&singer of the Magnetic Fields
is one of the most charismatic figures of the music scene today. His lyrics are a perfect blend of melancholy, cynic and humor accompanied by fresh, simple and heartwarming tunes.
Absolutely Cuckoo is the opening piece from "69 Love Songs Volume One".The 3CD set was picked as one of the best of 1999 by Spin and Rolling Stone.
I have the feeling you will want to sing along with this perfect song :), so here are the lyrics
Don't fall in love with me yet
we only recently met.
True I'm in love with you but
you might decide I'm a nut
Give me a week or two to
go absolutely cuckoo,
then when you see your error
then you can flee in terror
Like everybody else does
I only tell you this 'cause
I'm easy to get rid of
but not if you fall in love
Know now that I'm on the make
and if you make a mistake
my heart will certainly break
I'll have to jump in a lake
And all my friends will blame you.
There's no telling what they'll do.
It's only fair to tell you
I'm absolutely cuckoo
Annie Lennox contributes a successful rendition of "Train in Vain" previously featured in her album "Medusa" to the soundtrack. The original is the 1980 classic from the punk gurus The Clash "Train in vain" (Stand by me), a great pop-rock tune.Third Eye Blind's version (Backlash-Tribute To The Clash) didn't impress me as much as hers. This song could be an anthem for lovelorn people. (maybe it already is?)
Say you stand by your man
Tell me something I don't understand
You said you love me and that's a fact
Then you left me, said you felt trapped
Well some things you can explain away
But my heartache's in me till this day
Did you stand by me
No, not at all
Did you stand by me
No way
All the times
When we were close
I'll remember these things the most
I see all my dreams come tumbling down
I won't be happy without you around
So all alone I keep the wolves at bay
There is only one thing that I can say
You must explain why this must be
Did you lie when you spoke to me
Did you stand by me
No, not at all
Now I got a job
But it don't pay
I need new clothes
I need somewhere to stay
But without all these things I can do
But without your love I won't make it through
But you don't understand my point of view
I suppose there's nothing I can do
You must explain why this must be
Did you lie when you spoke to me?
"Woulda Coulda Shoulda" is from Taj Mahal& The Phantom Blues Band's Album "Shoutin' In Key Live" (Winner of the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues)
It's a perfect blues ballad with an outstanding guitar solo and melody & lyrics you'll have trouble getting out of your head
2000 Grammy Award winner (Best Newcomer) Shelby Lynne's "Dreamsome" comes from her album "I Am Shelby Lynne" and is an emotional love song in the 60s/70s pop R&B style adorned with organ and flute.(featured in Bridget Jones's Diary as well) "Dreamsome" is a stunning piece.
The former country duo The Judds started by Wynonna and her mother Naomi Judd had to come to an end because of Naomi's health condition. Afterwards Wynonna continued her career solo and her first album "Wynonna" sold over 3 million copies. The other Judd sister Ashley is the leading lady in "Someone like you". So as you would assume a song from Wynonna is inevitable; "You are" is a ballad which didn't appeal to me a lot, but I can imagine candlelight and a glass of wine would have changed my perception.
Van Morrison isn't only the favorite of Laura Bush, movie producers love him too.I think naming the movie after this timeless classic from the album "Poetic Champions Compose" (released 1987) was a smart choice."Bridget Jones's Diary"s closing scene was accompanied by Morrison's "Someone like you" (only in that soundtrack it's being sung by Dina Carroll, but I don't know why, hence the original is pure perfection) A catchy, tranquilizing, brilliant love song and one of my all time favorites. (Did I sound like John Cusack in High Fidelity? I'm watching way too many movies ;)
I've been searching a long time
For someone exactly like you
I've been travelling all around the world
Waiting for you to come through.
Someone like you makes it
All worth while
Someone like you keeps
Me satisfied. Someone exactly
Like you.
I've been travellin' a hard road
Lookin' for someone exactly like you
I've been carryin' my heavy load
Waiting for the light to come
Shining through.
Someone like you makes it
All worth while
Someone like you keeps
Me satisfied. Someone exactly
Like you.
I've been doin' some soul searching
To find out where you're at
I've been up and down the highway
In all kinds of foreign lands
Someone like you...
I've been all around the world
Marching to the beat of a different
Drum.
But just lately I have
Realized
The best is yet to come.
Someone like you
