| lirubis's Full Review: Sonartec MD Transition Hybrid |
When Todd Hamilton rolled that magical shot to a few inches of the cup to win the British Masters, Sonartec suddenly became THE company of THE hybrid. Golfers ran to the stores to get a MD, every Pro wanted one in their bags. what todd did that evening was to finally give a product and a company the fame the deserved for good.
Those of us who have played the MD (and most hybrids for that matter) already know just how versatile, dependable and fun these sticks can be. They work great from the tee, from the rough, from hardpan, from the fringe, on fairway bunkers, from tree branches...even from dry, hard fairways!
The MD comes with the "driving cavity" all Sonartecs are famous for. I dont know what it is so special about this design, but feel, distance and precision is NEVER a problem. Available in 17, 19, 21, 23 and 25 deg. lofts, you got enough choices to eliminate your 5 wood all the way to your 5 iron! I own the 23 and 25 versions, and so far the performance and quality are unmatched. Not even the superb Nike CPR's or the infallible Taylor Made Rescue stood a chance against the MD's.
BE WARNED
The Md's are not your grandma's clubs: the stock IROD shaft is designed to produce a low trajectory that most amateur golfers do not like a bit. I changed the stock shaft for the flexier (softer), lower bend point Accuflex HL shafts that a lot of pros rave about lately. This way you get higher shots with a bit more backspin.
Some people ask me why spend almost $200 USD for a MD when you can get excellent alternatives like the CPR's, Rescue Dual's, Adams or Hogans for a lot less money. My answer is simple: hitting is believing. Im my experience, only the Cleveland Halo's and Mizuno CLK's can matcj the distance and accuracy of the MD, but the FEEL on this Sonartec wonders is just BETTER. Beefier. Livelier.
Besides being great for rescue shots from rough, the MD's are extremely reliable chippers, work wonders out of fairway bunkers, and specially as putters from those shots around the green where you cannot putt but is also hard to chip because of hard/dry turf conditions. You cannot chunk a hybrid under this circumstances, that's why!
My MD's went from great to incredible when I installed a softer-tipped shaft and softer grips (Golf Pride Dual Durometer). The stock IROD shaft is a bit too low-flying and hard-feeling for my taste.
There is no better feeling, more precise hybrid out there. You need a bit of speed on that swing too. The MD is not really aimed at high handicappers because it demands good hand speed from those who play it. It is not among the most forgiving hybrids, too, so please take that into consideration. BUt my all means give them a try. They are worth every penny!
