| jo.com's Full Review: Song Airlines |
I was hoping Song, Delta Airlines new line, was listed separately because I have had such great experiences on it I wanted to review it. I have taken Song several times at this point and have easily gotten a non-stop flight to Florida at reasonable prices. My next flight on Song in 2 weeks is $220 round trip. Remember this is non-stop. I know there are cheaper flights around but one had me in Atlanta for a 4-hour layover. They are expanding their destinations and now have non-stop trips to Las Vegas.
I have booked Song both online and on the phone. Once, literally I was on the phone while my daughter was online because I was without a computer. In each case the customer service representative was very nice and patient with my needs.
You will find Song as a separate listing at the airport but within Delta's section. I have used the electronic check-in and also have checked in with a human being. Even when I checked in electronically, a customer service person was close by if I had any trouble.
While waiting in the waiting area I have found the customer service people at that check-in counter to be very nice. During my last flight the plane coming in was late and they announced that it was on its way and that they would clean it as fast as they could so we could get out on time. I was curious because this was announced about 45 minutes before flight time and when I asked about that I was told they just wanted people to be aware of everything that was going on. As it turned out, we left right on time and I arrived in Boston 10 minutes early.
Song boards by zones. If you look at your ticket you will see a zone number. It really is no different from boarding by rows except I did notice that the exit rows were empty until the end. The flight attendant said those rows were zone 6 so there are reasons for their use of zones.
On one occasion the crew came into the waiting area and introduced themselves. They told us we needed 3 things: our boarding pass, identification and a smile. They explained how to put the luggage in the overhead bin to make the most room for all the carry-ons. The overhead bins are extra large so that makes, I think, getting carry-on luggage in easier and faster.
On one flight, we really couldn't hear the instructions on how to use the oxygen mask and other safety issues so the flight attendant in front of us didn't just demonstrate it, she actually acted it out so their was no mistaking what was being said. This was after we were told that they know we've heard this dozens of times, but a refresher course never hurts.
I also got a kick out of the way we were told to put electronic items away. For example, one flight attendant said that for those of us who are members of CPAA (Cell phone addicts anonymous) and didn't think they could do without it, the crew would help them through it. Twenty minutes before landing we did "Song aerobics" - stretching and moving in our seats a bit. It might sound corny but if you don't like to fly these little touches make my trip better.
The inside of the planes, 757s, are very pretty. The sides of the seat are in different colored vinyl just adding to the whole pleasant experience. When I heard that the ride from New York was bumpy due to a hurricane, I asked the flight attendant how bumpy was bumpy. She was wonderful to me. She explained exactly how bumpy it was (Coffee was spilling on the tray table but not if I were holding it.) and to watch her. If she grimaced I would know we were hitting a really rough spot. As it turned out, the pilot did a fantastic job, as have all of them Ive flown with and got us through the bumps without my passing out!
I have found the website to be cute as well: www.flysong.com. I was looking around and came across this: "You can bring your pet on the plane as carry-on for a $75 fee each way (paid at check-in). Pets you can carry on include dogs, cats, birds, ferrets, rabbits, hamsters and guinea pigs. Sorry, but monkeys, pot-bellied pigs, reptiles, frogs, mice, rats, and spiders are not allowed on board (even though they may be pretty cool pets)."
The plane is very pretty. It has a green wing with green loops on it as decoration. You can't miss this airline! The lavatories are clean, as is the plane. The planes have had coach only and the couple I have been on have had different configurations. (The door was in the front once and toward the middle another time.) I felt that in spite of it being a smaller plane, i.e. one aisle with 3 seats on each side, the aisle was slightly wider than on other single aisle planes. Of course I haven't measured this, but I do know that the legroom was amazing. I could stretch my legs out completely under the seat in front of me (Ok I'm only 5'4") and on others planes, Southwest for example, there is barely legroom.
Song has no food. They don't even serve pretzels but between one flight I took and another they upgraded their menu. You will pay a premium on board, but of course you will at the airport as well. You will pay between $5-$9 for a yogurt or sandwich and a premium - $2.00 for a candy bar.
They passed out GameBoys for free (just give them your license to hold) and blankets sealed closed for the asking.
The flight attendants ended by telling us once again what a nice landing we had by the best pilots in the industry. The fact is the landings were superb. I usually brace my feet against the seat in front of me and didn't have to do that on my flights on Song.
And oh by the way, if you leave something, they'll be quick to tell you that you can find it on eBay the next day!
