| JMNS's Full Review: Sonicare Personal Model Ps 1 Sonic Electric Toothb... |
In 1993, I had gum graft surgery done on my upper left side due to brushing too hard. It was not pleasant and as a result, I have had problems with gum recession as well.
Following the surgery, each time I went to the dentist, I was still being told that I was brushing too hard and wearing down my gums further. I was honestly trying to be gentle and even brushed with a child's soft bristled tooth brush for a few years. I would brush lightly -at least I thought- but found that at my 6 month check-up I was still pushing too hard. The dentist informed me that if I continued, I would need another gum graft. This was rather disconcerting. Finally, one dentist recommended that I get the Sonicare toothbrush as it would help eliminate brushing too hard.
I resisted for awhile, due to the price of the Sonicare, but finally gave in and bought one. I decided that preserving my teeth and gums was more important than the price. I purchased my Sonicare about 3 years ago. At first it was a little different to get used to. I felt like it took a good couple of weeks to where I was comfortable using it. Then I was hooked!
The Sonicare comes with a rechargeable base that you can leave plugged in, although if left plugged in all the time, it will discolor the base of the battery pack to a yellow color.
The nice thing about this brush is that you do not have to apply any pressure to the teeth, you just set it against the teeth and gum line and let it do the work. The brush vibrates back and forth rather rapidly- about 30,000 brush stroke a minute or so loosening all nasty build up and plaque. It conveniently shuts off after two minutes, which is the recommended time for brushing your teeth. I usually go for 3 minutes or so and just push the on button again to finish up one side of my mouth.
The sound is very quiet when someone else is using the brush. However when I use the Sonicare, I can't hear a thing due to the vibration of the Sonicare.
I have had mine for 3 years and have had no problems whatsoever with it. The brush head needs to be replaced about every 6 months and they run about $15.00. You can also find them in a double pack for $24.99. I tend to replace mine about every 4 1/2 to 5 months as I brush each time for longer than the 2 minutes. Sonicare includes some handy reminder stickers to place on the base of the re-charger to remind you when it is time to change the brush head. The only minor inconvenience is that the brush head tends to accumulate a lot of gunk inside, so needs to be cleaned about once a week.
Since owning the Sonicare, the damage done to my gums has ceased and the overall condition of my mouth has greatly improved. Each time I go in for a routine six month check-up, I usually only have to have some minor scaling and polishing done. It is an excellent tool for keeping your smile healthy when used twice a day, a long with daily flossing! No cavities in 18 years!
