Pros: Easy to operate good resolution, 0 lux infrared mode.
Cons: Not a high end digital quality picture Cannot use VCR tape adapter to play.
The Bottom Line: If you can get one for under $350 I would say the Sony 308 is a great camera if you are considering it for making home movies.

| danieljackson's Full Review: Sony Handycam CCD-TRV308 Hi-8 Analog Camcorder |
It's easy to be confused by what's out there now in camcorders. VHS-C, Hi 8, Digital 8, mini DV etc. I picked the Hi 8 format because the picture quality is good and the price was reasonable for what we are using it for. We are not currently transferring video to our computer so I did not feel the need to go any better than Hi 8.One downside to Hi 8 is that the tapes will not fit into a VCR adapter like VHS-C cameras will but the picture quality is better. So if you want to play them on your t.v. you must use the camera as a player. The Sony 308 has about 320k pixels which gives a better than VHS picture especially when you use the s video transfer. It was a close contest between the Cannon ES8400V which has a lot of nice options and a better digital zoom but I liked the Sony 308's night shot capability (I believe only Sony has this feature) and the picture quality is better on the Sony. The camera is user friendly and is a nice looking camera. The 20x optical and 460 digital work well but remember the digital zoom starts losing picture quality a little past halfway but all are the same in this regard. The night shot infrared mode shoots video in total darkness up to 10 feet away. The picture has a greenish tint but you can see the subject very well. There are all price ranges depending on what you want out of the camera and what your willing to spend. We set a limit of $350 and chose the Sony.
