v908's Full Review: Sony CDX-GT200 Car CD/ MP3 Player
I wanted to replace the head unit in my truck (it only had AM/FM w/tape deck) with something that was inexpensive (my budget was less than $150) but with either CD/CD-R/CD-RW/MP3 capability OR an AUX input jack on the front so I could plug in my MP3 player. Well, this unit had BOTH those features (plus more) for $109 + installation -- hard to beat so I gave it a try. Bottom line, this unit delivers way more than I expected for $109 (just under $150 including installation, adapters, etc.). The sound quality is great, the CD player works great (whether using standard CDs, or MP3 CDs), the tuner is sufficient, and the AUX jack works perfectly (it even has the ability to turn up the AUX jack volume so it's not so out of line with the tuner or CD player when switching back and forth).
I really like the display (gives plenty of information) as it is crisp, easy to read, has several different options for what information to display, and honors MP3 tags on MP3 CDs. The player doesn't skip or hunt at all when going over bumps or potholes. The FM reception is a bit on the weak side, but not horrible (I didn't buy it for that anyway).
I really didn't think I'd like the remote (why would the driver need that?), but now that I have it, it's addictive! It's easy to adjust the main features and keeps you from having to reach for the head unit or take your eyes off the road. Very handy.
My only complaint -- and it's minor -- is that the buttons are small and the lettering hard to read at a glance. I found that I quickly got used to that and simply learned the position of the buttons with a little time, but still, they could be sized better and positioned more intuitively. But, that's pretty minor.
Bottom line, I don't think there's a better head unit out there for the price. Shop around for a good deal, negotiate the installation price down, and enjoy the great sound and ability to play a TON of music either through the AUX input or MP3-CD player.
