| jedhiggins's Full Review: Sony CLIE® PEG-S320 Handheld |
How have I lived this long without a Palm Pilot (or a clone running the Palm OS)? It boggles the mind. My paper Day-Timer has been with me for years, but I have never really felt like I was making good use of it. The Palm OS is fantastic. It is simple, easy to learn, flexible, and very capable. For the money (I paid $169 10-01), there is no other Palm-OS handheld that comes close to the features this has standard. Neither Palm nor Handspring sell a PDA for much under $300 that has a rechargeable battery, and this one is under $200! Sure the Palm M105 includes a hot sync cradle for $20 less (at time of my purchase), but it does not have rechargeable batteries and only comes (currently) with OS 3.5, which lacks several features (and the M100 and M105 are not upgradable). On the negative side, the flip cover is a little flimsy and doesn't latch closed. It is just a vinyl flap with a plastic stiffener in it to protect the screen, and just folds over the screen. Also, the charger cord and the USB hot sync cable use the same connector on the bottom of the unit, so you cannot use both at the same time. You can, however, purchase the hot sync cradle- for an additional $59, which will allow you to use the charger cable and the cradle at the same time (and provides a second charger cable, should you need one). After I purchased my Sony and realized it lacked the cradle, I was tempted to take it back and buy the m125 (least expensive Palm model with OS 4.0, but lacks rechargeable batteries). I figured I'd get a couple of sets of Ni-MH rechargeable batteries and a little charger, but after using the Sony for a few days, I'm in love with the jog wheel. It allows me to scroll thru my schedule or notes without having to whip out the stylus in order to read a few notes. The best example yet of this usefulness is my grocery list. It was really slick to be able to just spin the jog wheel to scroll thru the list without having to pull out the stylus. This feature is not available in the Palm models. I think I'll stick with the Sony. This thing makes me smile.
