Introduction
I had several reasons why I choose the Sony Multiscan E540 monitor. First it was big. It was a multiscan model and being a Sony CRT it has great color accuracy.
My use for the monitor in addition to a general computer monitor is for editing photos and watching High Definition Television as a second (or third) HDTV option.
Description
Being a CRT this is a fairly heavy monitor weighing in around 68 pounds. The overall size is 19.6 inches wide x 19.7 inches high x 19.0 inches deep, so this is not going to fit in the space of a LCD flat panel. My unit has an attractive black case with and On/Off button, a menu button and a selector toggle/button on the front panel. The monitor has a VGA connection for connection to the computer.
Controls
Pressing the menu button on the front panel brings up the monitor's control menu. Selections for adjusting the following are available:
Brightness
Contrast
Horizontal Centering
Horizontal Size (Width)
Vertical Positioning
Vertical Size (Height)
Various Geometry adjustments for Tilt, Pincushion, Bowing, etc.
Convergence
Degauss
Color Temperature
What is very nice about this monitor is each input format settings are memorized and switched to as the input format changes. For example in my system I have two computers and for my own reasons computer A has a video resolution of 1280x1024 which is a 4:3 aspect ratio. Computer B has a resolution of 1280x720 which is a 16:9 (HDTV) aspect ratio. I also use a HDTV tuner card that will output 1920x1080 interlaced (HDTV) which is also a 16:9 aspect ratio. The monitor will automatically change the height depending on which video format is being sent to the monitor to portray the proper aspect ratio. Not only the height, but also the positioning. This allows me to set one of the HDTV resolutions to the top of the picture on one and at the bottom of the picture for the other to reduce the burn in effect on the CRT.
Conclusion
If you are into accurate color rendition with deep blacks that only a CRT can provide, this is a very good choice.
