| pache's Full Review: Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W7 Digital Camera |
I bought this camera, because I killed my last SONY digital point and shoot (DSC-P72 3.2 megapixel). Prior to that I shot with a CANON Rebel SLR (film ewww!), but the point is I know "something" about taking pictures, but I could probably fit that knowledge in a shoe box. This is a great little camera and it takes superb pictures if used correctly.
Let me start off by saying, I am extremly rough on everything I own, and that includes electronics. Few things seems to last more than a year to 18 months. If the item does last, than my very active, busy life takes care of the item (i.e. it gets lost, misplaced, or left on some mountaintop.) My first SONY digital (the P72) was dropped, banged, scratched, thrown, frozen and it handled very well up until I submerged it under a foot of water. I dried it out and it worked but was never the same. It functioned for perhaps another 5 months before dying completely. At this point I had invested in a few memory sticks, and I liked the picture quality so I thought I would replace/upgrade to a DSC-W7 7.1 megapixel camera.
I bought the DSC-W7 for approximately $320 from Circuit City (online) in December 2005 and I was super pleased with it right away. It was small, took out of this world photos and had great options. I must have taken 2000-3000 pictures with it, before it was stolen out of my car in October 2006. I loved to use it and the photos were fantastic in that short period.
I used the automatic setting frequently but also the "P" for Program setting and "M" for Manual setting. These allowed me to play with the white balance and the exposure levels (+ or - what the camera estimated as optimal).
This allowed me to choose the lighting characteristics I wanted to appear in the photo and therefore adjust the subject of the photo. Most cameras will have this option but the SONY's seemed to suit me very nicely.
It was not the easiest camera to use and I did have to read the directions on a few different occasions to figure out how to adjust the shutter and F-Stop, white balance and exposure. It was even different than my last Sony, in terms of buttons and some menus.
Visiting Yosemite National Park with this camera was wonderful, I have 500 GREAT pictures of the park. Some are great photos, others are phenomenal. My girlfriend shoots with a Pentax 6.1 megapixel digital SLR and her pics and mine were almost equivalent. Two things I would say are better about her Pentax SLR, is that it seems to capture the 3-dimensions better and it is easier to find SD cards than MS cards (Memory Sticks) and SD is less expensive. The 3-dimensional quality of a photo is very noticeable when taking scenery pictures. Looking at a really good photo, you can almost gauge the distance between objects in the foreground and background. It gives the picture a voluminous quality, much closer to our binocular eyesight.
However, her SLR does NOT take video. It can be very valuable to be able to replay a video of a location as opposed to just showing still photos. The videos I have shot with my Sony W7 have been wonderful.
Since I lost my W7, I had to purchase another SONY digital point and shoot, somewhat because I now have so many MS cards but, also, it held up well and took great pics.
Overall, a great camera and I wish like hell I didn't leave it in my car to be stolen.
