Pros: Great for amateur home videos!
Cons: Quality really could be better, and the photos are not much to brag about.
The Bottom Line: If the price of this digital camcorder is a bargin buy, then snatch it up.

| rollypop's Full Review: Sony Handycam DCR-TRV18 Mini DV Camcorder |
In all honesty I was looking for something better, but for the money I decided to purchase the Sony Handycam DCR-TRV18 model. I have used this digital camcorder like crazy since I have owned it, and can report it works like a charm with no problems at all.
The mini dv tapes it uses are easy to come buy and very affordable at places like walmart. You have the option to use a memory stick as well for using it as a camera, but the photos it takes are not up to par with todays digital cameras. Still the option is there.
I have found that daytime recording comes out crisp and clear but have found that nightime recording even in decent lighting was average to poor.
The menu is easy and navigating through it is not difficult. After a few times of working your way around, its pretty easy.
Again, I think one of the best things about this digital camcorder is the daytime recordings which turns out very nice.
The sound quality is equally as nice and the camera does a good job of capturing any audio.
I stay on the pc all the time, and this camera has firewire and usb outputs. Both are easy to use and work with ease for me. I have also made lots of home movies and have had a blast with this camcorder recording things and then making home movies.
So basically if you are looking for a digital camcorder for a good price, and that works real easy with your pc, and software, this camcorder meets all those needs.
As for as the camera I think the manual control is very good, the flip out view screen is 2.5 inches and has always displayed a good picture. I have no problems with it becoming loose or breaking. Its built to last in my opinion.
Im certainly not an expert and that might be the bottom line with this model. It does a good job but if you are wanting the very best I would search for a higher end model.
Sometimes the zoom seems a bit hard to control but thats not really a big deal for people who just want to make home movies versus a full feature length film.
If you can find this at a price that is a bargin, then I would go for it. But there is certainly better digital camcorders out there.
