| mudlakeslim's Full Review: Sony Handycam DCR-TRV340 Digital-8 Camcorder |
After years of lugging a massive VHS unit around I grabbed one of these Sony's right before our 2001 Florida vacation. I was very pleased with all the functions available on this camera and even more pleased with the Studio 8 editing software I purchased through Sony. Using this software with the fire-wire connection you can create a lot more than most folks require. Having worked in television production I was right at home with the functionality of this editing software. In many ways it was easier to deal with than the at work system.
The ability to take still pictures is very handy and you can store many pictures on the bigger memory sticks. A friend of ours went out and bought the exact camera after our vacation after being so impressed with the ease of operation and quality of the video. Proper lighting is a definite factor when it comes to taking still shots, but you have the option of "night vision" which which works in zero light and can add a very unique effect. The battery is the only disappointment, but after 5 years I shouldn't kick too much. I'll be looking for a replacement soon and probably will upgrade to something with longer life or going with two batteries to insure a constant back-up.
