I own two of these models, both as backups for my HD camcorder. I've been shooting broadcast quality footage on both of these cameras for several years without any major issues. The Digital 8mm format is hard to find, but is dirt cheap. I've purchased lots of over 50 tapes on Ebay, brand new Sony, for less than $1.00 per tape. Sony is a great brand for camcorders, and I would not use another brand to shoot video with.
This video camera is built solid which makes it a bit heavier, but in my line of work as a storm chaser, the heavier cameras hold steady in the extreme conditions. I have soaked these video cameras in rain, slammed them with hail, and exposed them to a variety of wind blown debris and they continue to hold tough and true.
One of my biggest problems with this camera is the tape release. When attached to a tripod, the bottom-loading tape is blocked. As a result, you have to take the tripod plate off the video camera to release and/or insert a new tape. Makes for a lengthy transition of you are in a hurry.
Capturing is very easy on any computer. Most computers already recognize the video camera, so just hooking up a firewire to the video camera and computer and it will be recognized. Easy to capture and edit in Adobe Premiere.
