Pros: Awesome Everything!!
Cons: hmmm...there isn't one!
I got this player as a replacement for my old Apex player. I recently bought a widescreen television and wanted a progressive scan player.
I love this player. I think the silver design is sharp and the overall look of the player goes great in my component shelf.
Upon initial setup the menu was pretty easy to navigate. I had to look in the manual to understand what some of the terms meant, but since I'm not well versed in surround sound lingo it wasn't a big deal. I really like how you can set the player to use the best audio track. I was always switching to DTS 5.1 or Dolby Digital with my Apex, this one does it automatically. I also thought it was a piece of cake to set up the progressive scan output.
I really like the picture and sound quality. The progressive output looks incredible and the sound makes my subwoofer shake the room. I also like the compatibility of Sony. I had to use my Apex remote because nothing would control my old player. I can use my TV controller with this player and do 95% of the operations I can with the actual Sony remote.
I read the other reviews about this play and a few people were complaining that the MP3 feature did not work. I just popped an MP3 cd in and it plays perfectly. It's cool because each song is a chapter and each album is a title.
I honestly can't think of anything really worthwhile to mention here. Since all unbiased reviews will report the bad I will mention one thing I have noticed about this particular player.
The player will pause a split second when switching layers. Some people may find this annoying, but it says on the back of dual layer discs that there may be a slight pause in switching layers. I don't mind the .02 second pause.
I love this player. I bought it for the progressive scan output, the Sony name, and I wanted a better player than my old Apex. I got exactly what I paid for. If you don't have a HD-TV television and don't plan to buy one soon don't waste your money with the progressive scan feature. If you have or will buy a TV capable of the 480p line resolution this player is the way to go.
PS. I have a Mitsubishi WS-65809 HD-Ready Widescreen TV.
