Pros:Inexpensive, seemingly good quality
Cons:Minimal buttons on unit
The Bottom Line: Our Sony DVP-SR500H DVD player provides the right features for my family at the right price. A great value for a basic DVD player, just don't lose the remote.
Our old DVD players has been on its way out for some time. It would play the first DVD of the day but would then refuse to load another disc for the rest of the day. I finally broke down and bought the Sony DVP-SR500H.

What You Get
The Sony DVP-SR500H is a rather small, black, DVD player; its about 12" wide and 8" deep. It comes with an RCA cord for plugging into your television and a compact remote with batteries. The Sony DVP-SR500H plays standard DVDs, Read/Write DVDs and CDs. It is also Energy Star compliant and comes with a 90 day labor and 1 year parts warranty.
This is primarily my children's DVD player so it does see some rough usage, and so far is holding up quite well. I chose Sony based on the impressive quality of our other Sony DVD player . Our old one will run for hours and hours and even days without a problem. While my children are much better about turning off the DVD player than my husband, I'm usually impressed with Sony's quality and at $55 the price was right. I put little thought into the purchase of this DVD player. I had the money when we were in the Big Blue Nightmare. It was neither the cheapest but far from the most expensive. If I can get 4 years out of this DVD player I'll be happy.
The setup was easy. I unplugged the old one and put the Sony DVP-SR500H in its place, plugging right into the side input of our rather old television . While I used the supplied RCA cord, the DVD player also has a HDMI and coaxial outputs, although those cords are not included. One I turned the DVD player on, I was lead through a basic setup to select the language and aspect ratio. There are far more options than the quick setup leads you through. Reading through the manual I made sure to turn on the screen saver, the DVD is paused or stopped for 15 minutes. Honestly, it took my much longer to figure out where the Wii was going to go now that the DVD player is much smaller than the previous one.
The picture and sound quality of our Sony DVP-SR500H is commiserate with our televisions output abilities. While the DVD player claims to be "upscaling" to provide near HD quality, our television is no where near HD quality. Still I definitely noticed an improvement with the picture quality over the old DVD player. I can't say that I noticed any change in the sounds quality; it sounds just fine to me. The discs load quickly, must faster than our previous DVD player. This is a huge plus for my impatient 5 year old.
My children are enjoying movies they haven't been able to watch in a year. Due to improper handling, some of our discs are scratched and despite cleaning and attempts at repair, they skipped too much for the kids to enjoy. They have been testing lots of movies and many more play than on our old DVD player; the Sony DVP-SR500H is much more forgiving of slightly damaged discs. Some still won't play, but those are obviously quite damaged and need to be thrown away.
At first I really like the layout of the buttons on the unit. They are on top of the unit at the front edge instead of on the front panel. Our DVD player is toward the top of the stack of electronic equipment and the buttons are at just he right height for me to easily see and access, while not being too high for my kids. There is a power button to the left and then toward the right is the open/close button, play and stop, in a nice logical order for my kids. While at first I liked the uncluttered, limited controls on the unit, it isn't so nice when you misplace the remote control. There is no way to skip through previews, forward to scenes or access any DVD extras. You have to have a remote. We have a tough time keeping track of remotes in our house. I do see the need for a backup universal remote in the near future. We have only had this DVD player a few weeks and already the remote has gone missing a few times forcing everyone to watch an endless string of previews; you'd think they'd learn to put the remote back where it belongs! The Sony DVP-SR500H remote will turn our Philips TV on and off and adjust the volume, but that seems to be the limit; the reference guide that come with the DVD player lists the code for most major television brands.
The Sony DVP-SR500H is an inexpensive, good quality DVD player. It plays for hours on end without a problem. The remote is necessary for all but the most basic operations of this DVD player. Its small size and on top button placement do limit what you can place on top of the unit. Overall a good value for a basic DVD player.
