| nbunnie's Full Review: Sony Walkman D-E301 Personal CD Player |
I would like to start out by saying that everyone in the world now knows that this product has a heat resistant lid and a 10 second ESP shock protection circuit or read ahead buffer which ever you prefer. SO WHAT!
That is not the reason I bought it. The reason I choose this portable CD player is because I care about how my CDs sound. Yes I can tell the difference and yes there is a difference in sound quality. This all boils down to 2 important things! Number one has already been stated by another sound savvy author here when he talked about having a good pair of headphones. This is no bull it is essential if you are serious about listening to all the finer points of your music. Plan on spending at least $60-$80 on a good pair of ears. I recommend Grado Labs SR-60s. What is this? You have never heard of them well look them up on the net. The second thing I recommend is making sure that the Digital to Analog Converter is up to par. I recommend at least a 1bit, not a MASH. Fewer artifacts mean better sound. I found this in the D-E301 and for a decent price I might add. I have seen CD players from Sony that cost 4 times as much without this key feature. Plus the 301 has a line output although I would prefer a optical one it is only wire-line. What do you expect for the price? I can still make copies to my Sony MD Recorder. Sure the new CD players from Sony are small, have cool backlit displays, remote controls (note this one has a recepticle for an optional remote), CD text, and are more forgiving on battery life, but when it comes down to it you really buy a CD player for listening to music, not to look at the thing because it is a piece of art. Take my advice and for about $150 U.S. you can put together and excellent audio system headphones and all.
One more thing the digital mega bass should be left off, because it tends to distort the music in most cases. I know this isn't a pretty and flowery opinion that exalts the mighty name of Sony (because Sony is a trusted name in the industry ask me about my professional video experience sometime). But it is an honest one.
Happy Listening,
Me!
