| Nb41's Full Review: Sony Walkman D-E301 Personal CD Player |
[This is me, moving my opinion to the right product. Someone pointed out to me that the 171C was a different line, and low and behold, there was indeed a section for the E301 series. Hello, here's me, I'm stupid. Anyways, same review, so don't bother re-reading if you read it in the old spot. :> I deleted that one.]
I've said this before and I'll go ahead and be a broken record (or, to be in with the times, a skipping CD): SOny has CD technology that's decades ahead of the competition. My generation of Discman is actually the previous, but the features haven't changed drastically over the years. EPS (shock protection), megabass, etc.
EPS is, IMO, pointless and battery sucking, and I never use it. Why? It's a Sony, the bleeding thing never skips! It's fallen off my lap during a plane ride and not missed a beat. I can't gush on that enough--the reliability on these things is incredible. 2 years and still just as good as Day One.
Needs two AAs, and I will say the megabass, while worth it, does drain the batteries a little faster. Keep spares handy. I will add that the Discman does not skip overly much when the batteries are low, good for those of us who dispense sound advice and never, um, follow it.
It has been my experience that not only is EPS not necessary, it's not worth the extra money for 4 more seconds or whatever, unless this is also going to be your car CD player (but hell, I recommend Sony's 10-changer and one of their less expensive in-dash decks, which are also bulletproof).
The headphones that come with the unit are nothing to write home about but perfectly good. The sound is decent for a lil' Discman. I could wish for a little more variance in levels, but we can't have everything.
Did I mention I love Sony? This is actually my second Discman, and I don't think I'll ever buy another brand. It's just not worth the risk/hassel. For $70, you can't get better than this unless they're giving away those white-noise filtering headsets with it (which I also recommend for air travel).
