| schwarztech's Full Review: Sony Walkman D-E350 Personal CD Player |
When my Aiwa CD player died, I decided it was time to replace it. I looked at lots of models, but didn't want to spend a lot. I needed the ability to play back CD-RWs, since that's what I primarily use. My parents have an old Sony Discman from back when they were first introduced and it still works like a charm. My brother recently got a Sony Walkman CD player with AM/FM tuner that works well, but does not play CD-RWs. I decided to look at Wal-Mart and saw both a D-E350 and a D-E356CK, which are both the same model, with a few exceptions. The D-E350 has purple for the 'W.' logo on the lid and the writing, and also comes with 'street style' headphones. The D-E356CK is the same player, but comes with regular headphones, a car kit (DC adapter, tape adapter, remote), an AC adapter, and has blue-green for the 'W.' logo and writing. Since $10 was the only difference between the two models, I decided on the D-E356CK since it had the car kit goodies.
Like all the Sony models with this same form factor, you have the volume buttons (rather than a dial), a button to control bass boost and the AVLS (automatic volume limiting system), a button to control repeating, shuffling, etc., and the regular controls (stop, skip back, play/skip forward). There is no pause button. Instead, you press stop and the player will remember where you left off when your return. If you want to start at the beginning of a CD, rather than where you left off, hold down the play/skip forward button. I know this sounds weird, but it actually is more convenient.
Of course, there is a hold switch to lock the buttons, and electronic shock protection. The switch for that is located below where the CD goes. Since I always leave it on, it's no a big deal.
Battery life is excellent. It's supposed to last up to 33 hours per set, and so far (I've had it for about 2 weeks) so good. The shock protection is great, too. It's been bounced around with no skips.
As for the car kit, well, I have no need for that, but the AC adapter and remote are very useful. The remote plugs in on the site and acts as an extension for the headphone jack. It has controls for stop, skip back, and play/skip forward. What makes it nice is that it works even if the hold switch is on.
The headphones are okay (they're like any other set that comes with a CD player/cassette player). I'm looking to replace them with a better pair.
Overall, this is a good player for the money.
