Pros: Easy to use, minimal skipping when ESP is on, I got mine free!
Cons: It still does occasionally skip.
The Bottom Line: Overall I think this is a great portable CD player with the reputation of the Sony company backing it up. I wish it wouldn't skip when I shovel snow!

| scottcolson's Full Review: Sony Walkman D-ES51 Personal CD Player |
Last year sometime, Columbia House (yes, the CD club people) had an online sweepstakes and I won this Sports Discman as a prize. I can't complain about the price! Anyway, you may ask yourself, "what does a physician know about a CD player?" He should return to the medical topics where he has some expertise (maybe I should?). Anyway, I've been using it for about a year, so with your permission I will comment on my experience.
OK, in addition to being a doctor, I'm a bit of a music nut. I'm not really crazy (like buying CDs daily or anything like that), but I enjoy music. I'm also the kind of person who doesn't like quiet, so I often have background music playing.
Features
1. Water Resistant (important in the wet Iowa months, otherwise, probably not necessary)
2. ESP2 SteadySound® Electronic Shock Protection this is the feature that helps prevent skipping. Often this winter I have had the player in my winter coat while I shovel. The ESP does a pretty good job of preventing skipping, but during vigorous activity it did skip occasionally.
3. Mega Bass® Sound System Sounds good to me! (Hey, I'm a doctor, not a sound technician!)
4. Takes 2 "AA" Batteries They say it will go 14 hours, but I haven't clocked it!
5. Programming modes I haven't used these much, but you can do sampling of each track, program certain tracks, or shuffle.
6. Headphones OK, that's a given, but I think the headphones are pretty good. My only concern (as a doctor, not a consumer) is the proximity to the eardrum (tympanic membrane) and a concern for long term hearing loss.
7. Size A small 11 1/2 oz. without batteries in it.
Pros
Portability, waterproof, ESP, 14 hours of use with 2 batteries, pretty decent sound, I got mine free!
Cons
It still skips occasionally
OK, I got mine free, but I still think it is an excellent machine. I'll use it every time that driveway needs plowed! Thanks for reading!
