| jeftrokat's Full Review: Sony Walkman D-ES51 Personal CD Player |
I purchased the D-ES51 in the summer of '98. It has not failed me yet, I am constantly impressed by it's ruggedness and good design. This particular discman is water resistant and built with an O-Ring arround the entire CD opening. The player is designed in a clamshell format which increases it's durability. Sony doesn't reccomend taking it into the water but I did anyway to see if it would still play, it did. I don't encourage you to do the same however, you may not be so lucky. Its controls are mounted so that they can all be easily accessed by the thumb without looking. The best part about this is its incredible ESP2, this anti-shock memory lasts much longer than 45 seconds, if shaken, the discman will automaticly re-buffer the memory to compensate while the music continues un-interupted. This discman has an extrordinary battery capacity, two AA's will last for up to 14 hours of play and with lithium batteries, i squeesed 45+ hours out of it. It has been dropped, banged, smashed and stepped on and it still works fine.
The only two problems are that if you take it on an airplane, the change in pressure can put excessive stress on the plastic due to the air-tight seal, but it hasn't hurt mine yet. The other problem is the lack of a remote capability.
