| LHuang2's Full Review: Sony Walkman D-ES51 Personal CD Player |
When I was considering buying a Discman, I specifically looked at SONY, a trusted and reputable leader in the electronics industry. When I saw the Sony D-ES51, I knew that CD player was for me. The CD player comes with all the basic functions: ESP, Bass boost, Numerous play modes (Repeat, Shuffle, Program), and digital volume control. However, I purchased the CD player because of its rugged and waterproof design. I soon learned that this rugged CD player was not rugged at all.
The ESP (electronic skip protection) was very effective at first. When I first purchased the CD player, the player could operate very well without the ESP on while on gravel road or shaking. However, after dropping the CD player several times on carpet, the ESP degraded enormously. Although the ESP can be turned off while riding in a car, it must be turned on while walking. It is now very irritating to use the CD player, because turning on the ESP drains the batteries enormously. The LCD display also started to malfunction and parts of the screen were unavailable once you changed batteries or AC. The headset jack also appeared to have problems sending sound to my earphones, with static and ambiance noise in the background. The CD player is also very heavy, compared to other ones. The functionality of the CD player could be improved.
Overall, I would only recommend buying this CD player if you do not drop it at all. The CD player has a reasonably good battery life at approximately 14 hours with alkaline batteries; however, in this day and age, companies have extended the life on CD players with up to 30 hours. The functions on the CD player are basic, and the rugged design protects the CD player from water. If you need something with more functionality without the waterproof design, I would suggest other models. Awia and Panasonic are also leaders in the CD player industry, and I would highly recommend their products for the price and functionality.
