| mixer107's Full Review: Sony Walkman D-F411 Personal CD Player |
I never purchased a portable CD player in the past because I thought they did not have radio tuners. When I did a little more research I found that there were portable cd players with tuners. They just happened to be a little on the expensive side. I chose the Sony D-F411 because it was only one of two players in my local store I could find with a tuner.
The Sony D-F411 is a great player with lots of options. While it is now an older model player it still is much better than some of the newer players. It features an AM/FM tuner with 24 FM and 6 AM presets, ESP 2 skip protection, remote control capability, "groove" bass, AVLS, headphones, and an AC adaptor. The size of the player is compact considering there is a radio in it, but it is not as compact as some of the newer players on the market.
I use this player to listen to a variety of music CD's from rap to rock to classical. The sound quality of this player is exceptional. The "groove" bass output of the player is very good, but only separated into three levels of bass. Depending on your output device, the maximum bass is sometimes too boomy and the medium bass is not deep enough. I wish there were more increments in between to select.
The tuner is also good although FM reception is sometimes hard to get because the headphone wire is used as the antenna. 24 FM presets are just too many. There are only 6 AM presets which unfortunate for those who like to listen to AM radio. Sony should have took off 6 of the FM presets and added them to the AM presets.
The buttons on the player take some getting used to, but once you have figured out all the functions, the CD player is easy to use. The headphones that come with the player are not very good quality and really don't make the player sound good. Buy a good pair of comfortable headphones if plan to do serious listening. My only major complaint of this CD player is there is no back-light on the LCD screen. Sometimes it is too hard to read what is on the LCD screen when the lights are dim.
Overall, the Sony D-F411 is a great portable CD player. I bought it at $100 and am very happy with the purchase. Right now, in my small apartment I use the combination of this cd player and a great Cambridge Soundworks speaker set as my main source of music and radio. This compact setup sounds great and has replaced my old stereo.
