| frootbat31's Full Review: Drakan II for PlayStation 2 |
Drakan 2 is the second game of the series. The first game, Drakan Order of the Flame, also came in the PC version. You can even download a free demo from www.download.com if you want to check it out.
The first Draken has Rynn, the heroine of the story, where she loses her brother to these ugly bad guys called Wartoks. They are like trolls and goblins for the most part. You journey on various quests to achieve the main goal of saving her brother from the Dark Forces. It was typical good vs. evil storyline except you had various min-adventures you could pursue as well.
Drakan 2 is the continuing saga of Rynn and her ever-faithful dragon, Arok. They are 'bonded' which is important to know since damage to one, means damage to the other. Something attacks your dragon while you're off running around down some dark cave, and you can die. Not that happens too often, but you have to be sure to clear the skies of the bad dragons before exploring on your own.
You also have to talk to many people in the villages so that you can get the whole picture of the adventures you need to carry out. It seems everyone needs help too, such as a rescue of a boy from the creatures called Wartoks, to finding a relic you'll need to accomplish the main goals which is to save the worlds by opening these 'gates'.
The graphics are AMAZING! Fighting includes not only air-battles with Arok and various fire, ice, or 'other' types of breath weapon, or you fight off the bad guys with sword, bow/arrow, spells, magic items, or sometimes I would just sneak or run away. (No.. I'm not a coward..really!)
It takes a bit to learn the controls, and some might even say complicated, but the start of the games gives you simple ways to learn.
There is some interesting humor in the game as well such as the dreaded 'the chicken' weapon! Yes, its a chicken that clucks and everything, and you basically wallop the bad guys with it. It doesn't seem to mind too much either.
You also hear the wartoks and troll-like critters say things get upset with their collegues when they accidently shot during melees. Which I used to my advantage whenever I could.
The battles with Arok are breath-taking, and you often have to fly to destinations, then dismount to enter a cave. Arok will come with the press of a button if he can reach you, and I thought it was cute when I kept 'calling' him only to hear him say "What? I'm right behind you" where he was sitting there.
I thoroughly enjoyed this game, and even though it was a rental (and borrowed Playstation2) I'm seriously considering buying the game console to own the game!
