| Sarahhh's Full Review: Sony Ericsson KF-788 Cell Phone |
I wanted the convenience of a cell phone, but I didn't want to come across as some sort of show-off with one hanging off my belt everywhere I went. I wanted one small enough to slip into my pocket!
I got the KF788 because it was the least expensive tiny phone I can get right now from the service provider I wanted (Rogers here in Ontario Canada). I went with Rogers because they're already digital in my small town and everywhere while Bell and Clearnet are just going digital in certain medium size cities. I got the phone for free with the CDN$35(~US$25) a month. I also tossed in a voicemail and text messaging bundle for another 7 bucks.
I read alot of e-pinions about cell phones before I bought this sucker. 90% of the reviews were positive, so I took the plunge. And so far I am pleased. The sound quality is good. The reception is clear. The vibrating alert is enough for a shirt pocket. The text and voicemail works great. I have to charge it every day or two, which ain't bad IMHO. It only takes a couple hours to charge up. Not bad for my first cell phone ever.
It also looks cool. If ever a phone looked like a communicator from the old Star Trek shows, this is it. I half expect to hear the familiar chirrup sound from the show when I flip it open. And everyone is always saying "It's so small!". Just like me :)
One thing I noticed is that the phone has undergone a revision or two since its introduction. Gone is the one-line display some early reviews complained about. Now they come with a 3-line full pixel display. I was also stunned with disbelief at the Made in USA sticker. I figured it would either be made in Sweden, Asia or Mexico.
The only down side is, when the phone is just sitting there not doing anything, it'll occasionally reset itself, like you had just turned it on (except it doesn't beep). In itself it is a minor annoyance. But it can take the phone out of silent mode and re-lock the keypad if you have it setup for that. I've had it ring at a meeting when I was sure I had silenced it beforehand. I hope it doesn't ever happen in the middle of a call. I dunno if it is a fluke problem with my paticular phone or a glitch in the firmware, but I may take it back to Radio Shack to see if something can be done about it.
