| jamessun's Full Review: Sony Ericsson R280LX Cell Phone |
The Ericsson R-280LX is a solid phone that caters to both occasional cell phone users as well as power users.
Initially, I purchased the phone to try out AT&T's Digital PocketNet service here in the Washington, D.C. area. Having been a Sprint Spectrum/PCS user in the past (don't get me started on all the problems with Sprint!), I decided to switch providers. Along with my Sprint phone, I had another Ericsson (with AT&T as the service provider) and found that coverage was good (e.g. I could make/receive calls from home!). So, I took the plunge, bought the R-280LX and signed for AT&T Regional Advantage and Digital PocketNet service.
Now that I've had the phone for a couple of weeks, a few thoughts.
Good things - Seems like a solidly built phone. Keys have a nice feel to them. Standard battery with the phone has a battery life comparable to "official" estimates. T9 technology (in data mode) is great.
Not so good things - The icons used on the display are not intuitive (text message vs. voice mail). Must switch between voice mode and data mode (this might be a limitation of the PocketNet service and not the phone itself). Interface to adding/editing phonebook entries is kludgy. Phone security settings are confusing to me.
Overall, a pretty good phone for using both voice and data capabilities. I would recommend it over the Mitsubishi MobileAccess T250 (for price and size reasons) if you are using the Digital PocketNet service. If you're only using voice services, I'm sure there are better phones out there.
