atlantamoi's Full Review: Sony ICF-CD873 Clock Radio
I owned a GE digital clock radio from 1978 to 2000. That's quite a long time and when it finally started to act up I decided I would get something else I wanted to have around as long (dream on buddy). I was willing to spend more for a decent clock that would play CDs ("Dream On"?). I'm glad I purchased this unit, especially since I found it online for significantly cheaper than what I found at brick and mortar stores ($99 instead of $149).
The radio sounds great. And it's unique and cool looking. I like the blue look. It's a heavy, high quality product.
You can set the alarm to go off twice, good if your wife/husband gets up at different times (why do we say the alarm goes off when it actually comes on?) You can wake up to the radio, CD or a PITIFUL selection of nature sounds. If your idea of hearing the same bird chirp every 10 seconds sounds pleasing then you might enjoy it. It's a wasted feature I wouldn't use even if there was a live line to the Brazilian rainforest.
All is not perfect however. The louder you turn up the volume on the CD, the more you hear the bass shaking the whole unit. It's not just annoying, it's not acceptable listening. However, there is a bass knob to control this.
If you listen to music next to your pillow without wanting to wake up the neighbors it's not a big deal. But if you buy this unit expecting full LOUD stereo capability then you will not be happy. The buttons on top of the clock alarm are not the easiest to use when you reach over from the bed. There were times I needed to look at what I was doing. I just think this could have been laid out better... maybe using different shaped buttons would help. There are a couple of buttons with a small notch on the top to differentiate, but not enough of them. Also, you only get 5 preset radio buttons (with one to jump back and forth). This is acceptable, but more would be nice.
All in all, I'm happy with this product and would recommend... especially if you like blue!
