I originally bought Sony MDR E818, but due to their extremely low durability they cracked upon half stepping on them. Since then I wanted to try to find a set of in ear style headphones that would be able to take a few half steps on them and not break. My conclusion came to the E848's.
The Pros
These headphones have great sound. I've compared them directly to the street styles (which I thought were the way to go) but found that although the street style tended to have a more boomy type bass, these headphones had crystal clear bass.
The high end and mid on these headphones are MUCH clearer then street styles. I actually really like the clear mids almost more then bass, so it's crucial for headphones to not be overpowered in bass which these are not.
I have been very impressed with the durability of these headphones, lets face it, in ear style headphones tend to get stepped on by accident, well these can take it. (unlike the E818's).
These headphones maintain the 16 Ohm norm, which means that the volume level that a regular portable discman can provide tends to be louder then larger headphones.
The 15 mm driver on these headphones does make a difference compared to most 8 mm in ear style headphones.
The headphones come with the windup case to put them in, however for some people like myself, I prefer to have them just in my pocket.
The "open" side of these headphones are great. When the headphones are in the ears but not playing, there is absolutely no mutting effect, I can hear everything just as well as if they weren't in.
The sound leakage (how much sound escapes into the environment) is extremely low, yet you can hear people clearly even when the headphones are playing which can be perfect if you like listening to music but still want to hear people around you talking.
The Cons
These headphones are vunerable to being broken when stepped on, I find because in ear style headphones tend to be loose, you don't see them laying on the ground and can step easily on them.
The headphones do not have equal length cords to the ears, one side is much shorter then the other. To this day I'm not exactly sure why they have different lengths, perhaps some people prefer having the cord hang from one side of them instead of the middle of them??
The headphones don't look cool like street styles do, for me that is unimportant, but for some it can be a disadvantage.
I must admit, these headphones can become annoying with comfort, and although I'm used to in ear style headphones and comfort does not really bother me, I could see someone finding them less comfortable than other styles of headphones. But at the same time, I must say, they are one of the most comfortable in ear style headphones I've had.
The Conclusion
Although these headphones are not meant for extraordinary sound quality like my DJ headphones (Sony VDJ700). Tbey're also about 1/10 the price. For most people interested in sound quality, but are not an extreme audiophile, these headphones are great in ear style.
I'm not going to debate which style are better, but I will say that I thought street styles would blow the in ear style headphones away, however I found personally that it was the reverse. It seems the speaker being closer to the ear can really help clarity.
