| Chevyman16's Full Review: Sony MDR-EX70LP Consumer Headphones |
After lots of research before deciding which earphones were best for me, I got these for $79.99 Cnd. at the Sony store plus I got a 3 year extended warranty just in case. I want to keep these things around for a while. I also got $5 off because I pointed out that the price tag on them was wrong. (They are definately not $29 Canadian).
First of all, there are a couple different versions of these earphones. The EX70LP has an L shaped plug and a fairly short cord that's just barely long enough. The EX70SP has a straight plug and a really short cord that's meant for hooking up to a wired remote control on a portable cd player or minidisc player. The EX70SL has a small cord that comes with an extension in case you aren't using the remote. The extension makes the cord longer than the EX70LP which can be a good thing.
These earphones come with 3 sizes of earplugs that go onto the end of the earphones. The small ones are way too small for most people. The medium size fits most people right. Both the medium size and large size plugs fit my ears, I still haven't found out which ones sound better for me. The medium size ones are more comfortable though.
You should give these earphones a break in period where you don't crank the volume up too loud (you might damage the drivers before they are broken in) and the sound quality will improve after they've been used for a bit. If you don't like the sound right from the start, give them a bit of time before returning them. If you still don't like them they might just not fit your ears right. Most people find they sound really good for earbuds.
There are some mods you can do to make them sound better. I found these on the net at a site all about headphones. These mods have worked well for many other people. The bass is a bit too strong for a lot of peoples tastes. To make the bass deeper, tighter and less prominent put a small piece of tape over the little holes on the silver part of the earphones. The highs are also a little harsh. To fix this you can remove the earplugs and take out the piece of felt in the tube at the end and replace it with some foam of some type. Doing both these mods improved the sound a lot for me.
The best cheap earbuds are considered by most people to be the Sony MDR-E888LP but they are $20 Cnd. more than the EX70's, don't have the isolation, aren't as durable, and don't have as good bass. To me the EX70's are a lot better deal.
The durability is pretty good. The isolation isn't as good as I expected, so if you walk out in front of a car in traffic you might hear the horn and be able to get out of the way and survive. This might be a good thing depending on how your life is going. :-)
The small case that comes with the earphones helps protect them a little bit when your carrying them around.
In conclusion, these earphones should be really good for most people. Whether you like a lot of bass or just good quality sound, if you need earbuds these should do you fine.
