| erux's Full Review: Sony MDR-EX70LP Consumer Headphones |
I bought the Sony MDR-EX70SP (the difference between the SP and the LP is that the SP has a shorter cord with an extention rather than one long cord) from MiniDisco.com for $57--$57 well spent I say.
I was never sceptical about buying these earbuds (or canalphones) due to the fact that I have been a earbud only person for a few years due to the fact that most of the time I listen to music is when I am not at home or want privacy. I also choose to use earbuds rather than large cans because I don't want leakage or anything to act as a earmuff.
As with many other users, before I made my purchase I had difficulty choosing whether or not to buy the Sony MDR-E888LP or the Sony MDR-EXSP. Both headphones at eopinions.com received awesome ratings so this site was helpful in reassuring me that both headphones rocked, however, more people tended to emphasize the fact that the EX70's ranked higher in the bass and isolation department whereas the 888's had the better treble and mids.
gear.ign.com's review of the two earbuds finally showed me the correct path as the reviewer there gave the EX70's a 9 and the 888's an 8. He said that overall the EX70's featured better sound.
Do I agree? Well--I never listened to the 888's so I can't say yes or no, but I can say that the EX70's are unbeliable. I listen to rock, dance, techno, rave, etc.--lots of music with heavy pumping bass--and the EX70's keep up with it by sending out awesome quality music and pumping bass as the song was meant to be heard. I actually compared these earbuds to one of my friend's larger seinhesser (did I spell that right?) cans and I found that the EX70's not only gave better sound, but felt more comfortable (can't even feel them after a few minutes)!
The carrying case was way sub-par. The case that came with the EX70's was only big enough to store the drivers (the part of the unit that has the mini-speaker and goes into your ear) or the cord! Talk about small! I wish that Sony used the same or a similar carrying case as the one they used with the 888. Also, these earbuds get dirty from earwax and earsweat easily. That is why I do not recommend sharing these earbuds for no matter how clean your ears are, these still will collect some guunk.
Having trouble finding YOUR earbud and don't mind shelling out anywhere between $30-60? Get the EX70's. Forget the 888's unlist you prefer non-heavy bass music such as classic or easy listening. EX70's all the way!
