| kdragon's Full Review: Sony MDR-EX70LP Consumer Headphones |
I recently bought an iPod and at about the same time my Sony Twin-Turbo earphones, which have served me well for the past 7 years, completely died. I started looking for a replacement that was small, comfortable, and portable with good bass response. I heard good things about these earphones from other people so I decided to give them a try.
The MDR-EX70LP earphones have a unique design which makes them both very comfortable and very good at blocking out ambient noise. A soft and flexible silicone earbud actually plugs your ear canal instead of sitting right outside the canal as with your more traditional earphones. The silicone portion of the earphones can be changed between 3 different sizes - small, medium, and large. Medium is the default size and should fit most people, but having a choice in size is nice for people with large or smaller ears.
The cord is flexible and comfortable and obviously of higher quality than your run of the mill $15 headphones. The mini-stereo plug is very low profile. The cord to the left ear is much shorter than the cord to the right ear, like many of Sony's higher end earphones.
The "case" which comes with these earphones is a little plastic thing shaped like an over sizes gel capsule. It can only fit the ear buds, not the cord or plug. I was expecting something along the lines of the winding cases other earphones come with so I was a little disappointed. The case is not completely useless, though, because the silicone earbuds are on the delicate side and need to be protected if you're going to be throwing your earphones in a bag or purse along with keys or other sharp pointy items.
The earphones sound very good to me. I like to listen to trance, house, and hip-hop quite a bit so bass was very important to me. These earphones definitely produce the best bass out of any earphones I've tried. I think the reason these earphones produce such good bass is because they can transfer so much vibration directly to your ear since they have so much contact with it. I found that pressing the earbuds in too far made them sound less loud and less "bassy" than when they were positioned such that they were just deep enough to block my ear hole. This is in stark contrast to every other pair of earphones I've tried. With those other earphones I found myself pressing them in as far they would go and holding them to my ear in order to get the best bass out of them.
I also own a pair of Sony MDR-G72 headphones and after using them side by side can say that the MDR-EX70 produces better bass. I think the MDR-G72s are louder than the MDR-EX70s when using the same source, but they just can't reproduce the resonating bass feeling the EX70s create.
These earphones block outside noise very well. Maybe too well for some situations. The first time I tried them out at work, I was surprised and a little disoriented because I wasn't able to hear myself typing at all. I didn't realize it, but the tapping of my keys was always something I'd been able to hear prior to using these earphones. This isolation from outside noise is nice for listening to music as it really lets you get immersed. The problem is when somebody wants to get your attention by calling your name, you probably won't hear it. For this reason, I'm hesitant to use these earphones when out walking about in public because I feel like I've completely lost one of my senses. When the music is playing, you'll be hard pressed to hear anything other than your tunes. If you're looking for something to use while jogging then you should probably look elsewhere since these would pose quite a safety risk.
Bottom line is that these are nice earphones that deliver great bass and sound isolation. If you like bass heavy music or need to block out distracting noises then you will probably like these earphones very much.
