dkovsky's Full Review: Sony MDR-NC11 Consumer Headphones
I bought these primarily for listening to audio books during my long bus commute. They work great for that. As a non-scientific measure, they enabled me to cut the volume control on my mp3 player from about 30 to about 15. I think this will save my ears.
These were my first noise-cancelling headphones, and I bought them because I didn't know how well the noise cancellation would work. I didn't want to spend a whole lot of money on something that might not work for me.
They do great with fairly constant noise like the rumble of a bus. They won't help with intermittent noises like someone using a hammer.
Now for the downside, and this is a huge one. They come with 3 or 4 different sizes of interchangeable earplugs. You choose the right size for your ears and slip them over the end of the speakers. The earplugs eventually fall off.
I lost my first one on the bus in the dark. I lost my second to my recliner at home. They are tiny and difficult to find. And yes, size does matter. For now, I'm getting along with different sizes, but the earplugs fall out of my ears and don't work nearly as well. The headphones don't work at all without the earplugs, not even as normal headphones.
I wrote Sony and asked how I can get more earplugs, and it appears that you can't. I would NOT recommend these ear plugs for anyone unless you can first find a confirmed source for extra plugs.
Now that I know noise-cancelling headphones work well for me, I'm going to invest in some that will last. As much as I like Sony in general, my next ones won't be Sony.
