jvandegr's Full Review: Sony MDR-V150 Professional Headphones
I purchased these headphones to replace the ultra-light (and ultra-poor sounding) headphones that came with my Sony Sports CD player. Although they do sound significantly better, they are not what I hoped for in terms of sound quality or comfort. Of course, it's hard to hope for a lot with anything that produces sound when you're only spending $20. I'm listening to them now as I write this review.
Sound
Highs are acceptable, not too harsh, but sometimes a little bright. Mid-range is fairly well-balanced and probably the best characteristic of these headphones. Bass is too boom-ey when the lowest amount of bass boost is selected on the CD player. However, this is probably at least partially the fault of the frequencies boosted by the CD player. With maximum bass boost selected, these headphones are intolerable. So why do I use any bass boost? Because the bass response of these particular headphones is flat without it.
Comfort
First, the good: they are easy to adjust to the height of my head, even while I'm listening to them. And now the bad: they press too hard against my ears to be comfortable for more than 30 minutes. The plush ear cups make them appear to be comfortable, but the geometry of the frame is too rigid. If I'm wearing eye glasses, they are even more uncomfortable because of the glasses frame behind my ears. I've made several attempts to reduce the pressure by bending the all plastic headphone frame outward, but to no avail.
Design
The headphone cord is a little over 5 feet long and appears to be adequately shielded. The 1/4 inch plug is NOT gold-plated, as is often found on higher-quality models. Each headphone ear piece can be rotated 180 degrees so that you can listen without putting them on your head. This is the so-called "studio monitor" design. Of course, you probably wouldn't want to use these as studio monitors given the sound quality.
