| PGenocide's Full Review: Sony VAIO GRX590 PC Notebook |
I own the sony GRX laptop, and am an avid power user. Im sure if your reading this review, your already aware of most of the laptops specifications, so I won't bore you with those. Instead i'll talk about how the laptop fares in real world use.
For starters, let me say, the laptop is FAST. It is among the most powerful laptops on the market, yet keeps a somewhat modest footprint compared to the full fledged Pentium 4 machines. There is no software available on the market that will slow your machine down. I use it for intense graphics work in Photoshop 7, and 3d modeling in IMSI TurboCad. Don't worry about it having enough power to suit you.
There are a few things that set this laptop apart from the rest in my opinion. This is the stuff you get for paying the extra dollars for a sony.
1) The LCD Screen: Yes, you know its huge, and that is obviously important. But more important than its size, is its quality. Most manufacturers use identical LCDS but sony really uses a higher quality screen. At 1600x1200 you will be AMAZED by the quality of your LCD screen. It looks nicer than most desktop monitors. This does a wonder in reducing eye strain.
2) The touchpad: Once again, this is something of a higher quality than most laptops. The touchpad is hugely sensitive, and requires little pressure to move the mouse nicely. It makes using the laptop without an additional mouse more practical, and gives you extrodinary accuracy for doing things like graphics and design.
3) Networking: Yes, the built in ethernet port is a WONDERFUL accessory, there is nothing more annoying than using a PC Card ethernet port. But above that, the USB and Firewire ports are incredibly nice to have built in. You can use them to connect an external hard drive if needed.
4) Quality body: The sony is built nicer than most laptops. It is sturdy, and you get the feeling it isn't going to fall apart on you. The little 'doors' that cover the ports are magnetic, and hold themselves closed nicely. Also the keyboard has a wonderful touch, and is easy to use.
The cd-burner/dvd combo drive works perfectly. Its nothing special to the sony though, this drive is available on many laptops.
Theres 1 thing I find extremely annoying with the sony. The thumb wheel. It isn't a scroll wheel, which is what would be extremely useful, it is instead linked to a small peice of software that is supposed to help you quickly navigate around and launch programs you use often. In reality, the software is shoddy and extrodinarly annoying becuase it pops up all over the place when your trying to work. You can disable the software, and the wheel will then work to scroll SOME software, but not nearly as useful as a standard scroll wheel. The sony alternative to a scroll wheel is simply running your finger along the edge of the touchpad, this initiates scrolling, but is not as easy as a wheel.
Battery life is tremendous, and so is the sound system.
I would not hesitate to say the sony is the best laptop available on the market. Also, they have great resell value.
