inscrutable_po's Full Review: Sony PlayStation®2 LEGO® Batman™ Bundl...
The PS2 and it's games are plentiful and cheap right now. You can get a used PS2 for $79 in the mall and it's not hard to find good games for ten dollars or less used. It seems like most of the games will only let you save once per level. If you're near the end of the level and you get killed, you have to start all over again from the beginning. I don't know why they make games that way. After failing four or five times I find it really tedious to repeat the whole level.
I think the controls are not as good as they could be. Using the analog sticks I find it hard to put the crosshairs on a head. It works sometimes, but other times I'll be a little too far to the right and then too far to the left. A mouse works much better.
A lot of PS2 games don't have auto targeting. Looking around takes a long time too compared to computer games. Moving the player with analog sticks is not as controlled as I'd like it. With a small amount of pressure that is really very hard to keep constant I can move my avatar slowly, but just a tiny bit more pressure and he'll run. In most games I don't even bother with creeping. It's more effective to just take a few quick steps and crouch again and again.
The camera is often in the wrong place on PS2 games. I don't know if this is any better on other consoles, but on the PS2 it's a problem.
The bottom line is that the computer does all the above better and usually with a sharper picture. The original Playstation kept things simpler and seemed better at doing what it did. The PS2 has a lot of improvements, but in many of its games these improvements aren't totally worked out.
The bottom line is that it is worth it, but in my opinion there aren't many games on the PS2 that are exciting if you've been playing computer games. That may not be fair, but that's how I'm looking at it - as a person who's played modern computer games and only now tried PS2 games.
One game that stands out and possibly makes it worth it to buy the system is Resident Evil 4. Lots of fun. Another game I enjoyed is Destroy All Humans 2.
