The Bottom Line: If you really like playstations and have lots of money this may be the system for you. I'd consider XBox360 too as it's cheaper with more titles.
danielsaddress's Full Review: Sony Playstation 3 (60 GB) Console
I have had my PS3 for almost a year now. I chose the PS3 over the Wii and XBox360 after reviewing the specs of all three and my preferences. I have not regretted (yet) my decision, and here's why:
Wii: Much to "kiddie" for me. The idea of their controller is neat, but it doesn't work well (I've tried it) and is annoying and hard to play with. The idea of a whole console around nothing but a controller mystifies me as it has such a high rate of success(which I think is mainly due to its great price)
Xbox360: Just seemed to have worse hardware in most regards when comparing with PS3. Lack of HD player, I didn't see any games I wanted for it, and I'm more familiar with Sony gaming systems.
I've had PS2 and PS1 in the past and I like their controllers etc. Also the PS3 has the integrated Wifi, Blu Ray Player (Which I use and love, if I didn't have PS3 I'd want to buy a dedicated player but now I don't have to!) I love cell processors (Comp Science Grad) and that got my attention as well
The OS is the cross bar similar to psp. I find it a bit tedious to use at times, but it's not horrible and easier to learn than a standard computer OS.
The playstation Network is free which is how I think all networks should be (You already shelled out $500+ on the console!!! There are free demos available through the PSN so you can try some games out before you buy.
The heat never bothered me, I've ran my PS3 for hours and don't notice anything overheating. My laptop gets WAY hotter. Considering the raw power behind PS3, I'm surprised it doesn't get hotter.
One interesting thing is the front panel buttons. Rather than classic style buttons, you have a heat sensing button that you just "touch" and it turns on/off. Seems unneeded but makes you feel like you have the expensive machine that you do.
The card reader is great if you have a digital camera. I can easily upload my pictures to my HD TV. the PS3 then can play slideshows of your pictures sorted by date. The slideshows are very well done and very pretty. I also enjoy zooming in and out of my pictures on the huge screen of a TV (Just not the same on a computer monitor)
Obviously the software titles right now are lacking. I have RFOM and it's a great game, but you can't play it non stop. I'm sure new games will come out as time goes by, but for now there are hardly enough good titles to merit the expensive price for the PS3.
One final note. Realize that when you buy a PS3 or XBox360 you're basically just buying a computer. Back in the days of PS and Nintendo, there was a huge line between gaming system and PC. Now a PS3 is basically a PC with a Sony Proprietary OS installed on (Which you can use linux on it), and a controller you dont have to use (it's only connected via USB) I think it's nice, as I can now use my computer mouse, keyboard, memory card, etc on my gaming system, but the price of the newest systems also reflect that...
