johnbamber's Full Review: Sony RM-AV3000 LCD Touchscreen Remote Control
Beware of other reviews for this product, because they only point out what's bad about this remote. Sure, the text on the LCD can be small and some might think you need a college degree to operate this remote, but I think otherwise. Once you take this remote out of the packaging, it's preset to operate MOST sony products. I don't recall seeing that it operates ALL sony products. I have a Sharper Image remote controlled FAN and I trained the remote to operate the fan flawlessly as a Minidisc player! Believe me, this remote has versatile written all over it.
Setting it up might be daunting to some, but the manual is very well-written, so you should be well on your way quickly. There are three "System Control" buttons on there which can perform sequential operations with ease. Granted the remote has up to 15 of these macros, but the first three are accessible as hard buttons on the remote and 4-15 are via the LCD. In my setup, I have a DVD player (Sony), VCR (panasonic), Receiver/5.1 speakers (sony), digital cable box (sony), and TV (RCA). I was a little bit irritated that the remote didn't operate my receiver out of the box, but I have one of those home-theater-in-a-box things so perhaps the receiver is a bit different. NO PROBLEM! Using the learn function I just taught the commander which buttons I needed and voila, I was up and running. I set up the first macro to turn on my setup, and believe me it's such a nice experience to press one button and see my home theater come to life.
Now I'm not going to write a 100% positive review because there are a few not-so-great points, more than I could fit in the "15 word maximum" cons section...the LCD text is small, I'm a glasses-wearer so my vision isn't perfect, but once you learn where the buttons are it's almost muscle memory to perform basic tasks. If you're using something that isn't a TV, cable box, vcr, dvd player, CD player, or power amp, you have to do just a touch of menu navigation to access the remainder of the functions. No big deal, but for someone who has trouble seeing the text on the screen it might be cumbersome.
